Description: The penultimate book in the acclaimed Malazan Book of the Fallen fantasy series On the Letherii continent the exiled Malazan army commanded by Adjunct Tavore begins its march into the eastern Wastelands, to fight for an unknown cause against an enemy it has never seen. The fate awaiting the Bonehunters is one no soldier can prepare for, and one no mortal soul can withstand - the foe is uncertainty and the only weapon worth wielding is stubborn courage. In war everyone loses, and this brutal truth can be found in the eyes of every soldier in every world. Destinies are never simple. Truths are neither clear nor sharp. The Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen are drawing to a close in a distant place, beneath indifferent skies, as the last great army of the Malazan Empire seeks a final battle in the name of redemption. Final questions remain to be answered: can one's deeds be heroic when no one is there to see it? Can that which is unwitnessed forever change the world? The answers await the Bonehunters, beyond the Wastelands. Archaeologist and anthropologist Steven Erikson's debut fantasy novel, Gardens of the Moon, was shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award and introduced fantasy readers to his epic 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen' sequence, which has been hailed 'a masterwork of the imagination'. This River Awakens was hist first novel, and originally published under the name Steve Lundin. Having lived in Cornwall for a number of years, Steve will be returning to Canada in late summer 2012. Review: This installment of the Malazan saga comes with a foreword. It clearly sets your expectations and lets you dig in for the long haul. This book is one half of the whole. You have been warned. It is a huge installment, one of the largest episodes so far, and it is no suprise that an ending to the story could not be wrought out in 1 book, but needed the time and dedication and love Erikson has wisely decided to show it. So Dust of Dreams is the first half of the last part of the Malazan books of the fallen. So with the foreword in mind I have set out to read the Dust of Dreams, my long awaited companion, and I am not dissapointed. It is up there with Memories of Ice, my personal favorite in the series up till now. I love reading about the Bonehunters and I've been waiting a long time for Fiddler to really grow into his role as diviner of the Deck. Bugg casts off the (tedious) shroud of comic relief and finally behaves as an elder God. The deck of Dragon does more than forecast, but marks the key players for the story to come, and leaves us with a pretty good idea of who's destined to go where. This happens within the first 200 pages of the book. As the Malazan army is headed towards the wastelands, we are privy to what exactly is waiting for them out there, and it isnt pretty. In fact, it is one of the most imposing and intimidating races of all time. This is just some of the story as it pertains to the Bonehunters, however Silchas Ruin has gazed into the Abyss and knows what is holding Ghosthands and Fener and he is not about to go down without a fight. There are jade stars striking across the sky, like a jade dagger looking for a living throat. The houses are at war and it is going to be a bloody one. All in all, this is not going to be a book that dissapoints the fans. It is a long indrawn breath, suspended holding on for the last installment. Enjoy it, you can only read it the first time once!

Review: Similar to previous entries, Erikson seems intent on bludgeoning you over the head with new, irrelevant characters that have none of the personality of previous characters like Quick Ben, Kalam or any of the Bridgeburners/Bonehunters. The majority of the book is taken up by these new characters, mostly involving the Barghast which haven't really been a focal point until now and my god was it a chore to struggle through page after page of monotonous droning on about their clans, kinslaying and a war I had no investment in. Then we have the dreaded Snake, which is by-far the worst sub-plot Erikson has ever written which I admit to skipping through due to it being so poorly conceived and completely unnecessary. I'll have get onto The Crippled God at some point, but in the mean time I switched over to Joe Abercrombie and the excellent "The Trouble With Peace" which I'm enjoying much more.

Description: Who is to say dreams are insubstantial when whole lives can be lived in their pursuit?' When an office worker receives a mysterious device promising to transport her to a parallel universe, she assumes it is just another marketing stunt. That night, she visits a fantastical place in her dreams; on waking she returns to her normal life, only to return to the same dream the following night. At first she finds the ongoing dreams bizarre, but the more time she spends in the dream world, the less she wants to wake up. Yet as her fantasy begins to encroach on her waking life, dream and reality collide with drastic consequences. With sharp insight, wry humour and Black Mirror-esque themes, Red Dust, White Snow highlights the blurring of reality and fantasy in our increasingly virtual world.
