Review: Over several months, I kept hearing (from various, very different sources) how wonderful this study bible was. I've never been a huge fan of the ESV (not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just not my preferred English translation), but I started to think that this might be a good buy. I delayed the decision for a long time, because in reviews both here and on the US site, there are such frequent complaints about the quality of the Bible: pages of 'blurred' or 'smeared' text; excessive crinkling of pages near the spine; too much 'see-through' in the pages. And several people mentioned that it was too heavy and massive to take to a Bible study. So, I was half expecting a tome that I would need a forklift to carry, with see-through pages, crinkled and semi-legible. I'm pleased to say that none of these were a problem. The paper is thin, but of the best possible quality, with very little 'see-through'. I checked carefully, but haven't found any smudged text or crinkles. Yes, it's a thick book, but I've seen people carrying BIGGER Bibles to study groups. The notes are, indeed, mostly very good. Not just the notes, but the maps (alongside the text, where you want them), the illustrations, the supplementary articles... the whole thing is just stupendously well done. The ESV still isn't my favourite translation, but this is probably the best study bible I've ever seen. Admittedly, I have found a few places where the opinions in the notes seem slightly... eccentric. For example, when I'm told that the words of Genesis 3:16 "indicate that there will be an ongoing struggle between the woman and the man for leadership in the marriage relationship," I can't help wondering whether this is perhaps more of an insight into the writer's own marriage than a comment on the Bible verse! Another minor quibble - I wonder if this Bible includes a bit TOO much unnecessary stuff. After the last verse of Revelation, there's still another 750 pages to go! Yes, some of them are the useful concordance, but then there's a LOT of other material. I mean, just to take one example, do you REALLY need your Bible to include a lengthy section on what other religions (and cults) believe? If that's your interest, wouldn't you rather just buy a little book about it? Do you REALLY need to carry it around in your Bible all the time? Personally I would have happily sacrificed a lot of stuff for a slightly slimmer volume. Oh well. In this particular edition, I love the two-tone leather effect, and the material the cover's made from. I have several Bibles and books that are bound in this material, and I actually prefer it to leather. Anyway, despite a few reservations, I'd definitely recommend this. =================================================================== PS: Six months after the original review. I continue to like this version so much that I've decided to spend a bit more cash and get the nice calfskin edition (not least because Amazon are currently offering the black calfskin version at half price!). I'll give my truetone version to someone else. (It's still in perfect condition despite all the use)
