Description: Spectacular, mysterious, elegant, or grotesque, the vertebrate skeletons of Earth's fossil record carry within them the traces of several billion years of life. Evolution in Action, a resounding success on its initial publication in 2007, is a unique and beautiful attempt to provide a map of those billion years in time. Now updated and presented in a smaller format with seventeen new utterly distinctive photographs, this book steps beyond the debate and presents the undeniable truth of Darwin's theory, showing through 200 photographs of skeletons both obscure and commonplace, but always intriguing, the process by which life has transformed itself, again and again,.

Review: My first impression, upon picking up this book is that it was thick and heavy, making it stereotypically challenging to decipher and remain conscious. However, I was delighted to find a stunning array of photos fully complement each of the 44 short chapters, making this very readable indeed! The chapters of 'Evolution in Action' are divided into 6 sections: 1) Architecture (skeletal form) 2) The Birth of Species 3) Seduction & Selection 4) Evolutionary Tinkering 5) The Power of the Environment 6) Evolution and time Each chapter uses B&W photos of skeletons to expound an aspect of evolution, relating to the species illustrated. This really is a case for a picture being worth a thousand words: The glossy paper that makes the book heavy is put to optimal effect in capturing explicit anatomical details. Apart from teaching evolution by skeletal comparisons and vestiges, there is also a secondary narrative woven into the narrative - historical objection to common ancestry on religious grounds. Panafieu shows himself to be well up to both tasks, deftly expounding skeletal details, whilst charting the general enlightenment of mankind. I would say this is a fairly unique publication, the product quality and author's specialist knowledge make it very good value. The most similar books (I have also read) are the equally excellent 'Inside Nature's Giants' - a CH4 production, and 'The Ancestor's Tale' - one of Richard Dawkins finest. Buy this if you seek wide ranging evolutionary instruction, unravelled in photographic format.

Review: I was hoping for the larger version format that was first published. As I use it for making scaled sculpture armatures the bigger format woudl have been more useful. great book and lovely photos but it would be fabulous to have one with just contemprary animals as well as the historical animals and some contemporary.

    Price: £10.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: How did we get here? All cultures have a creation story, but a little over 150 years ago Charles Darwin introduced a revolutionary new one. We, and all living things, exist because of the action of evolution on the first simple life form and its descendants. We now know that it has taken 3.8 billions of years of work by the forces of evolution to turn what was once a lump of barren rock into the rich diversity of into plants, animals and microbes that surround us. In the process, evolution has created all manner of useful adaptions, from biological computers (brains) to a system to capture energy from the sun (photosynthesis). But how does evolution actually work? In Evolution, leading biologists and New Scientist take you on a journey of a lifetime, exploring the question of whether life is inevitable or a one-off fluke, and how it got kick-started. Does evolution have a purpose or direction? Are selfish genes really the driving force of evolution? And is evolution itself evolving?ABOUT THE SERIES New Scientist Instant Expert books are definitive and accessible entry points to the most important subjects in science; subjects that challenge, attract debate, invite controversy and engage the most enquiring minds. Designed for curious readers who want to know how things work and why, the Instant Expert series explores the topics that really matter and their impact on individuals, society, and the planet, translating the scientific complexities around us into language that's open to everyone, and putting new ideas and discoveries into perspective and context. • Waterstones Quantum Evolution

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Quantum Evolution presents a revolutionary new scientific theory by asking: is there a force of will behind evolution? In his astonishing first book, Johnjoe Mc Fadden shows that there is. 'Mc Fadden's bold hypothesis that quantum physics plays a key role in the origin and evolution of life looks increasingly plausible. The weird behaviour of matter and information at the quantum level could be just what is needed to explain life's astonishing properties. If these ideas are right, they will transform our understanding of the relationship between physics and biology.' PAUL DAVIES In this brilliant debut, Johnjoe Mc Fadden puts forward a theory of quantum evolution. He shows how living organisms have the ability to will themselves into action. Indeed, such an ability may be life's most fundamental attribute. This has radical implications. Evolution may not be random at all, as recent evolutionary theories have taught: rather, cells may, in certain circumstances, be able to choose to mutate particular genes that provide an advantage in the environment in which the cell finds itself. This 'will' - described by Mc Fadden as 'the life force' - has startling implications. It is at the root of consciousness and free-will and provides a new understanding of the origins of life and the purpose of death.

  • Waterstones Improbable Destinies

    Price: £10.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: One of the best books on evolutionary biology for a broad readership ever written' Edward O. Wilson A dazzling tour of evolution in action that sheds light on one of the greatest debates in science The natural world is full of fascinating instances of convergence: phenomena like eyes and wings and tree-climbing lizards that have evolved independently, multiple times. Convergence suggests that evolution is predictable, and if we could replay the tape of life, we would get the same outcome. But there are also many examples of contingency, cases where the tiniest change - a random mutation or an ancient butterfly sneeze - caused evolution to take a completely different course. In Improbable Destinies, renowned researcher Jonathan Losos reveals what the latest breakthroughs in evolutionary biology tell us about one of the greatest ongoing debates in science. Evolution can occur far more rapidly than Darwin expected, which has opened the door to something that was previously thought impossible: experimental studies of evolution in nature. Drawing on his own work with anole lizards on the Caribbean islands, as well as studies of guppies, foxes, field mice and others being conducted around the world, Losos reveals just how rapid and predictable evolution can be. By charting the discoveries of the scientists who are rewriting our understanding of evolutionary biology, Improbable Destinies will change the way we think and talk about evolution.

  • Waterstones On the Origin of Evolution

    Price: £10.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A Waterstones Best Book of 2020 The theory of evolution by natural selection did not spring fully formed and unprecedented from the brain of Charles Darwin. Rather it has been examined and debated by philosophers the world over for thousands of years. This lively history traces the evolution of the idea of evolution, showing how it has changed and been changed by different societies over time. It will put 'Darwin's Dangerous Idea' into its proper context, showing how it built on what went before and how it was developed in the twentieth century, through an understanding of genetics and the biochemical basis evolution. None of this diminishes the achievement of Darwin himself in perceiving the way evolution works at the level of individuals and species, but his contribution was one link in a chain that extends back into antiquity, and is still being forged today.
