Review: The book was more paperback than hardback for the price. I wouldn't buy it again for this price.

Review: cover of book duped me into thinking that the pictures inside would be the same quality- they were very poor and dark and the paper was not the same as the outside cover. very very disappointing. I had to buy another present for my Grandchild as this was not fit to give her as she wanted to know about famous painters.

    Price: £19.95

    Brand: Royal Academy of Arts

Description: From Michelangelo's marbles to photographic self-portraits, artists have always been fascinated by their creative encounters with the human body. Often a key part of their early training, drawing and sculpting from life goes on to inform their later work in unexpected and inspiring ways. This illuminating publication brings together interviews with over 15 artists from all disciplines, including painters, sculptors and conceptual artists, working in a variety of different media. Through their in-depth conversations with the artists, writers explore the many ways artists work 'from life': from Jeremy Deller's open life class with Iggy Pop as model to Jonathan Yeo's innovative use of 3D scanners and virtual reality. An introductory essay provides the historical context for a practice deeply rooted in artistic tradition. Generously illustrated with reproductions of the artists' work and photography of their working methods, this book upends all our prior assumptions about 'working from life'. Description: This richly illustrated survey of the history of Irish painting encompasses the entire span from the middle ages to the mid-twentieth century. The book includes both well-known and virtually unknown artists, Irish artists who worked abroad as well as in Ireland, and major foreign artists who came to Ireland and worked there for extended periods. Among the more than 350 works reproduced in full color are many paintings from notable private collections which have not been exhibited to the public. Drawing on the unique combined experience of leading Irish art authorities Anne Crookshank and The Knight of Glin, the book presents an exciting roll call of important Irish painters, from the talented Garret Morphy of the Restoration period to William Scott and Louis Le Brocquy of our own time. Broad in its scope and perceptive in its scholarship, the book is the most complete and beautifully illustrated history of Irish painters available today. • Piano Nobile Publications Craigie Aitchison

    Price: £35.00

    Brand: Piano Nobile Publications

Description: For the first time, Craigie Aitchison and the Beaux Arts Generation tells the story of Craigie Aitchison's role amongst the bright young figurative painters of post-war London. Along with Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff and Euan Uglow, Aitchison belonged to 'the Beaux Arts generation': a set of highly talented painters first shown at the Beaux Arts Gallery by Helen Lessore. Under her discerning gaze, the early careers of these five artists were launched and close friendships formed, even as a wild divergence of artistic styles took place. By the time of its closure in 1965, Lessore's gallery had laid the foundations for the next five decades of British art. The book accompanies Piano Nobile's exhibition of the same title. A memoir by Susan Campbell provides a first-hand insight into the student days of Aitchison, Andrews and Uglow. Herself a student at the Slade School of Fine Art and an erstwhile visitor to the Beaux Arts Gallery, Campbell contributes a vivid account of these artists and their early careers. The book further includes three definitive texts by Aitchison, Andrews and Auerbach. First published in 1959 and 1960 by the literary arts magazine X: A Quarterly Review, these short essays provide a cogent insight into the three artists' thinking. The book also comprises a fully-illustrated catalogue of forty-eight works. A first section presents a significant group of works by Aitchison, followed by a second section with paintings, watercolours and drawings by Andrews, Auerbach, Kossoff and Uglow. Many works are drawn from private collections and have not previously been published.
