Review: Although I'm new to the sport of cross fit i fell in love pretty dam quick with it. It was just what I needed. Rich Froning is what I need on days I don't feel like training. Just watching a youtube clip is enough to get me fired up. This book was excellent. If you don't like the religious aspects to it then tough because he is simply not afraid to say what's most important in his life and I respect that. In fact it has inspired me to be better in my faith too. An outstanding athlete and all round great guy. I wish I could be part of crossfit mayhem to improve on my fitness even more and really get my priorities right in my life. Starting with the 3 F's like Froning. Highly recommended even if you are a non believer, just accept that he truly is and respect him for so much more than a squat clean. Thank you Rich for the inspiration...I'm getting back on track because of your example.

Review: It's such a shame that such a pioneer of CrossFit has written such a poor account of his rise to prominence in the sport. This is a terribly written book, distinctly lacking in detail or insight into his true mindset or motivations for success. Key moments in his life are brushed over, the slightest thought or insight given to his motivations or reasons for success or failure generally absent. It's as if given the chance to truly dig deep (which he does in the field of competition) in a narrative sense, Froning has just backed out of the opportunity. And if David Thomas, who I assume ghost-wrote the book, was interviewing Froning for the book, he has almost only conducted the interview by email. Perfect opportunities to get under the skin of Froning have been missed throughout the entire book. Many commenters have mentioned Froning's discussion of religion as a put-off. Now I am not religious at all, but I didn't think that was the problem. At least, in some sense, Froning has something to hang his motivations on. It's the lack of extrapolation of these motivations that are missing. There's nothing there for CrossFit fans to truly connect with for themselves. It's a dull, dull book. What would have been better is a mix between Froning's thoughts, and perhaps more of an oral history or perspectives from those around him - family, friends, trainers, competitors. More time could and should have been spent digging deeper into certain mindsets, motivations or opportunities. Instead this book is the exact opposite of the sport of CrossFit. It's boring, and lacking energy and true guts.
