Description: In August 1812, two centuries ago, the River Clyde would see a transport revolution - one that would change the economy of the river for ever. A Helensburgh hotel owner began to operate Europe's first ever commercial steam ship from Glasgow to Greenock. No longer would ships be dependent on the tide or the wind. The Comet, as his ship was known, had been built by John Wood, of Port Glasgow, and was fitted with paddle wheels. Her first voyage from Glasgow to Greenock was made at about 5mph against a headwind. Advertised to sail on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Glasgow, the Comet operated the first scheduled steamship service in Europe. It was the start of a revolution that would see the Clyde as the greatest shipbuilding river in the world, and the river's estuary as a haven for pleasure steamers and puffers calling at the remote loch-side piers and inlets. Companies such as David Mac Brayne's and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. would be formed to operate steamers far and wide, a legacy kept alive today by the Paddle Steamer Waverley. Alistair Deayton and Iain Quinn take us through the two centuries of Clyde paddle steamers, illustrating the most famous, such as the Columba, Jeanie Deans and Waverley, illustrating not just the ships themselves but the piers they sailed from, from Rothesay to Helensburgh and from Loch Goil to Loch Long. • The History Press Ltd Clyde Shipping

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: The History Press Ltd

Description: For centuries the Clyde has been synonymous with ships but in the last thirty years there has been a decline in the number of vessels using the lower reaches of the river. The shipyards that made the river famous are all but gone and the plethora of paddlers that plied their trade between the coastal towns have been replace by a few ferries. Clyde Shipping - The Twilight Years is a trip down memory lane for those who remember when the Clyde was the third most important river in Britain and its ports some of the busiest. That heyday has gone and all that we have to remind us of the greatness of the Clyde are images such as the ones contained within this book. No longer are the world's largest ocean liners built here and only a few large ships now make the journey up the river. Once busy ports like Greenock and Port Glasgow lie silent for much of the time and all that remains are photographs and the memories of those who worked on this once busy river.

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Death of the Fronsac: A Novel

    Price: £8.99

    Brand: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC

Description: Waterstones Thriller of the Month for November 2018. 'A marvellous meditation on what it is to have lost a country and a past, and to be adrift in search of what might once again constitute a home' - Times Literary Supplement. A story of sabotage, betrayal, and the terrible sadness of exile. Scotland, 1940. The Fronsac, a French warship, blows up in the Firth of Clyde. The disaster is witnessed by three locals. Jackie, a young girl who thinks she caused the explosion by running away from school. Her mother Helen, a spirited woman married to a dreary young officer; and their lodger, a Polish soldier whose country has just been erased from the map by Hitler and Stalin. All their lives will be changed by The Death of the Fronsac. Acclaimed journalist and writer Neal Ascherson turns his considerable insight to fiction in an epic tale triggered by the mysterious destruction of a French warship off the wartime coast of Greenock. Nuanced and carrying a lifetime of understanding of both setting and subject, The Death of the Fronsac is a sweeping tale of a century split by war and the consequence of its horrors and betrayals.
