Review: This was a major disappointment. I'm normally a fan of these light novels, but this one was as bad as the wicked Wizard Boy novel, but for different reasons. At least one half of the novel was characters repeating previous thoughts or events in their head as if cut and paste from earlier novels. One half of a book just made of maudlin memories of good 'ol times in past novels. What the hell! I paid for this you know. This was a short novel. That means around 106 pages of either common refrains recycled from earlier novels or sentimental thoughts about prior events. Then about a quarter of the novel not sentimental crap was actually the MC or the second MC of this novel, priestess, being wishy-washy inside their own heads. "Do I do it. I don't know. Am I strong enough. Hmm, I'm not sure. Maybe I'm not good enough, but maybe I am." There was only a single quarter of this short novel that actually involved anything actually happening. Only 50 pages of content, tops. So what happened? What did happen was short, but not sweet. It was derivative goblin slaying of the lowest quality yet. There were basically only two fight scenes the party was involved with. The whole second fight scene was handled like a slapstick cartoon from the 70's. Think Wile E. Coyote. It was disappointing, annoying even. The drop in quality in this novel from the rest is not merely a matter of regurgitation of old tropes. Some flawed and convenient tropes Kumo Kagyu uses got worse rather than better, as well as some of his existing writing flaws. During the rare quarter of the book where stuff happened I was confused almost as often as I wasn't. Perspectives switch, and speakers change without any regard to informing the reader. It is a real challenge trying to figure out who is talking or who is doing something and to whom. As far as character progression goes. Absolutely none, nada, zero. Does our Goblin Slayer decide that he is done preparing for his suicide at the hands of goblins, making sure that he only leaves bad equipment on his corpse, so that he can finally plan on living and so buy some better equipment? No. Does our Goblin Slayer decide to actually communicate a little so as to avoid unnecessary and annoying 'misunderstanding' tropes that push plot forward in many Japanese light novels. No, he does not. Does our Goblin Slayer finally read a bestiary like all the other adventurers so that instead of being the butt of a joke he can actually claim to be well prepared or cautious in anything other than name. Nope. Everyone remains the stereotyped cut-out characters they were in the very first novel. There is literally nothing good about this novel. I regret paying for it.
