    Brand: Thames & Hudson Ltd

Description: In 1801, at the age of 26, Joseph Mallord William Turner became the youngest ever member of the Royal Academy. His early paintings combined great historical themes with inspired visions of nature, but subsequent experiments with the effects of light led him swiftly towards a evolutionary dissolution of forms. In this profusely illustrated book, Olivier Meslay invites us to follow the development of Turner's incandescent art, a bridge between Romanticism and Impressionism and one of Britains' most remarkable contributions to art. • Pen & Sword Books Ltd Great Northern Railway Gallery

    Price: £25.00

Brand: Pen & Sword Books Ltd

Description: The Great Northern Railway was one of 120 companies that ran trains in Britain during the Victorian and Edwardian period. Formed in 1846, it traded independently for seventy-six years until absorbed into the London & North Eastern Railway on 1 January 1923. Operating a network of nearly 700 route miles it ran trains between King's Cross, London and York, into the Eastern Counties and the East Midlands, the West Riding of Yorkshire, into Lancashire and even south of the Thames. It developed distinctive characteristics, both in the way it managed its affairs and in the appearance of its trains, stations, signals and signalboxes. Numerous photographs were taken, particularly from the 1890s onwards, by dedicated amateurs attracted to the lineside by the sight of speeding steam locomotives in apple green livery, hauling polished teak carriages. Goods trains and the endless procession of coal trains were not such popular photographic subjects, but by searching out these and images of staff, stations and signalboxes, this book aims to capture something of the spirit of a once-great organisation in the heyday of Britains steam railways. • Ebury Publishing In the Footsteps of Churchill

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Ebury Publishing

Description: Richard Holmess insightful new biography of one of Britains greatest leaders is both a study in character and the story of an extraordinary career. Much has been written about Churchills role as British prime minister during the crisis years of the Second World War, but in this book Holmes uses new material to investigate the influences that shaped the man: his troubled schooldays, his flamboyant politician father, Randolph, and his famously attractive American mother, Jennie. Holmes argues that the qualities that made Churchill great also led him to commit catastrophic blunders. The same recklessness that made him a hero when he was a young correspondent during the Boer War arguably cost thousands of Allied lives during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915, and may also have contributed to the fall of Singapore in 1942. 'In the Footsteps of Churchill' takes us on an exhilarating journey through Harrow School, the North-West Frontier, the Sudan, South Africa, 10 Downing Street and his beloved Chartwell; a journey that begins in the aristocratic splendour of Blenheim Palace and ends in the quiet of a country churchyard not far away the compass of an extraordinary life in a few Oxfordshire acres. 'Richard Holmes provides a truly fresh interpretation of the great man Holmess mature and wise portrait is studded with facts about the period and episodes in Churchills life that amuse, engage and entice. The authors eye for the telling detail, as well as his deep immersion in all the relevant archives, raises this book far above the common ruck of Churchilliana. Andrew Roberts This supremely skilful military historian achieves a freshness of approach that makes Churchill hard to put down. Max Hastings, Mail on Sunday.
