Review: . The nation is gripped by the story of the Lost Mona Lisa, a copy of Da Vinci’s famous work, stolen from the Royal Family many years before. There is a £25 million reward for its return. Mia’s friend Jake is full of conspiracy theories that sound so crazy she wants nothing to do with them. Mia writes to her grandmother who is travelling all over the world and tells her in emails all her trials and tribulations. The story is told through these emails and her grandmother’s responses, through Jakes blog and other characters’ letters and messages. This is a delightfully wacky story, similar in vein to Bethany Walker’s first book Chocolate Milk, X-Ray specs and me. In both stories the child protagonist is oblivious to what is really happening, whilst the reader can see it all unfolding. There are lots of little details, almost like asides, in the text and the illustrations by Jack Noel are suitably humorous and match well. This is the perfect book if you do want to laugh and for teachers looking at letter writing skills too. With thanks to Bethany for my copy- which the 8 year old is desperate to get her hands on!

  • Rowman & Littlefield The Thefts of the Mona Lisa

    Price: £25.00

    Brand: Rowman & Littlefield

Description: If you read one book on the Mona Lisa, let this be it. From the artwork to its theft and role in popular culture, The Thefts of the Mona Lisa provides the complete story, as written by a best-selling, Pulitzer finalist. Leonardo da Vinci's portrait, called the Mona Lisa, is without doubt the world's most famous painting. It achieved its fame not only because it is a remarkable example of Renaissance portraiture, created by an acclaimed artistic and scientific genius, but because of its criminal history. The Mona Lisa (also called La Gioconda or La Joconde) was stolen on 21 August 1911 by an Italian, Vincenzo Peruggia. Peruggia was under the mistaken impression that the Mona Lisa had been stolen from Italy during the Napoleonic era, and he wished to take back for Italy one of his country's greatest treasures. His successful theft of the painting from the Louvre, the farcical manhunt that followed, and Peruggia's subsequent trial in Florence were highly publicized, sparking the attention of the international media, and catapulting an already admired painting into stratospheric heights of fame. This book tells the art and criminal history of the Mona Lisa. This book examines the criminal biography of Leonardo's Mona Lisa, with a focus on separating fact from fiction in the story of what is not only the most famous art heist in history, but which is the single most famous theft of all time. In the process this book also tells of Leonardo's creation of the Mona Lisa, discusses why it is so famous, and investigates two other events in its history of theft and renown. First, it examines the so-called 'affaire des statuettes," in which Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire were arrested under suspicion of involvement in the theft of the Mona Lisa. Second, there has long been a question as to whether the Nazis stole the Mona Lisa during the Second World War | ??a question that this book seeks to resolve.

  • Thames & Hudson Ltd Mona Lisa and the Others

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Thames & Hudson Ltd

Description: A witty introduction to the Louvre's many masterpieces, told from the perspective of the subjects themselves - including resident superstar Mona Lisa. Millions of people visit the Louvre Museum every year to gaze and gawp at its all-star art collection. But there's one star who gets a lot more attention than anyone else - and her very own special queuing system, if you can believe it! Well, the Louvre's many other masterpieces aren't too happy about being overshadowed - and they're here to tell everyone what makes them just as worthy of the Mona Lisa's teeming crowds. With a focus on portraits and other person-centred artworks, Mona Lisa and the Others reveals the stories behind some of the Louvre Museum's most famous artworks. Napoleon Bonaparte takes readers behind the scenes at his own coronation; the Venus de Milo explains what happened to her missing arms; the Seated Scribe lets slip some gossip about the ancient Egyptian royal family; and Madame le Brun has a polite moan about juggling the demands of being Marie Antoinette's portrait painter and a working mother. But perhaps most intriguing of all, Mona Lisa reveals that there's more to her portrait than her mysterious smile. Written in a light-hearted and contemporary style by Alice Harman, and illustrated with the energetic artwork of Sir Quentin Blake, Mona Lisa and the Others is an entertaining introduction to the Louvre Museum's collection that will appeal to children, parents, guardians and teachers from all walks of life.
