Review: Very insightful read. Grossly over simplifying it here, but Russell essentially reassures us that we should not worry about becoming the cautionary tale of another Black Mirror episode, so long as we're able to effectively apply control measures to future AI systems ???? whether or not you feel confident about that premise is your decision, but hey ho, suppose we won't have to wait too long to find out if we've created our own demise anyway! There's a handy appendices at the back explaining core concepts of contemporary AI systems which is useful. Brilliant for people familiar in the field, not so sure about the causal reader unless you have a background in mathematics/engineering etc.

Review: I don't understand why a computer scientist starts to mix science with politics. This tries to be a woke book as well. Promoting vegetarianism, belittling meat-eaters, climate control topics, etc. That is one thing. Don't promote your socialism or social control, or your political propaganda in AI books. Secondly, having Ph.D. in computer science and AI, the suggested main solution - namely the three principles - is rather infantile. To be honest, reading this book was a total waste of time. I regret it.

Description: Many of the revolutionary effects of science and technology are obvious enough. Bertrand Russell saw in the 1950s that there are also many negative aspects of scientific innovation. Insightful and controversial in equal measure, Russell argues that science offers the world greater well-being than it has ever known, on the condition that prosperity is dispersed; power is diffused by means of a single, world government; birth rates do not become too high; and war is abolished. Russell acknowledges that is a tall order, but remains essentially optimistic. He imagines mankind in a 'race between human skill as to means and human folly as to ends', but believes human society will ultimately choose the path of reason. Description: Intolerance and bigotry lie at the heart of all human suffering. So claims Bertrand Russell at the outset of In Praise of Idleness, a collection of essays in which he espouses the virtues of cool reflection and free enquiry; a voice of calm in a world of maddening unreason. From a devastating critique of the ancestry of fascism to a vehement defence of 'useless' knowledge, with consideration given to everything from insect pests to the human soul, this is a tour de force that only Bertrand Russell could perform.

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Taylor & Francis Ltd

Description: According to Bertrand Russell, science is knowledge; that which seeks general laws connecting a number of particular facts. It is, he argues, far superior to art, where much of the knowledge is intangible and assumed. In The Scientific Outlook, Russell delivers one of his most important works, exploring the nature and scope of scientific knowledge, the increased power over nature that science affords and the changes in the lives of human beings that result from new forms of science. Insightful and accessible, this impressive work sees Russell at his very best.

    Price: £5.99

Description: The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts' Bertrand Russell' Science is what you know. Philosophy is what you don't know' Bertrand Russell discovered mathematics at the age of eleven. It was, he recalled, a transporting experience: 'as dazzling as first love'. From that moment on, he would pursue his passion with undying devotion and fervour. Mathematics might succeed, he felt, where philosophy had failed, reducing thought to its purest form, and freeing knowledge from doubt and contradiction. And for a time, so it seemed. Russell's mathematical investigations effortlessly resolved at a stroke some of philosophy's most intractable problems. Yet if mathematics could be a liberating mistress, she was also an unreliable one. Opening up the work of one of our age's undisputed giants, Ray Monk's exhilaratingly clear, readable guide tells a compelling human tale too: a moving story of love and loss, of ecstatic triumph and deep disillusion.
