Review: What I know about Marxism could cover a postage stamp. Through a process of osmosis one gleans certain things from different sources but nothing firm. What I did know for certain was that Marx was a difficult writer and a hard read. This book, though I bow to any Marxist scholar here with an informed view, really opened up my mind to what Marxism was/is about especially by placing it in context to Hegel and his ideas and then going beyond that to cover the latest theories. Yes it is an introduction, I certainly don't consider myself anything other than a novice based on this book only. But as an exercise in educating and engaging the reader it really works. It is an accessible format but still a great read, hence my five star rating.

Review: More than half the book is NOT about marxism. I understand the historical context and post-marxism is important but more room could have been used to explain the doctrine. Also, many pages about the Soviet Union, post war philosophy but NO mention whatsoever of WWII or its consecuences and influence. Some concepts are explained well, others are not, and others are simply misunderstood. Worst of all, the author, especially near the end of the book, seems to be selling his own ideology, a conservative ones at that. His 10 point criticism at the end is practically a political panflet. A shame. Other books in this series are great (see Nietzsche, etc.) but not this one. Its not a bad overview but if the subject interests you, go somewhere else.
