Review: Can't remember how i came to find this book but it's a good job i did as so far having read it, understood it and put into action seom of its recommendations I can honestly say its been at the heart of making me feel I can financially secure my and my families future...it really is that poweful....and yes...oh so simple...unbelievably simple to do. No gimmicks, no costly mistakes, no getting ripped off (and not knowing it till its too late). The author should be given an award for having written a book that can and should change the common mans furture. Not to give anything away.....the central premise of the book is that the simplest, cheapest and easiest (fire and forget) way to make your money work harder for you in the least risky way is to invest in a particular way. Its like a revelation to read....i was thinking...`yes that makes so much sense why didn't i always know that` though most of the book. With the world full of get rich quick schemes this will clear your mind....will set you free...and has made me feel calmer and less stressed about my financial future. I have several books i keep that i'll make sure my kids read at the appropriate time...this is now one of them.

Review: The book basically demonstrate how investing in only 2 ETF/Index funds is sufficient for most investors. An that' s perfectly fine. The advice can be given in 2 minutes, a book has been written to drive the point home. Fair enough. What I most take issue with is the Pensions sub chapter. This books is - and I make an educated guess here, mainly for the UK audience. How this portion not tailored to this audience is beyond me. "The government sets a maximum charge that can apply to Stakeholder pensions. It’s currently 1.5% each year for the first 10 years and then 1% each year after that. The government could change these limits in the future." The books states a default 1.5% on page 159. The reality is most Pensions providers in the UK already charge far less than 1% for their ETF/Index products. They also have, while indeed limited, sufficient options that allow very closely aligns with the principles of the rational investor. Hence Figure 13.1 depicts quite simply an unreal scenario. £100 deposited into a pension scheme are matched by the employer - and sometimes doubled or even tripled for some lucky few; so £100 deposited mean minimum £200 into the pension plan, growing at the same rate as invested interdependently, minus fees - which are realistically much closer to 0.5%, and not the 1.5% the book claims. So compare that to the £75 post tax invested in a similar fund growing at the same rate, but at the cost of 0.3%, and for the £75 to outgrow the £200 would take a few lifetimes at the speed of 0.2%. This sends out the wrong message I think to the bulk of UK readers considering the Pension plan as an investing vehicle, which is quite possibly the best the UK has to offer - and in my view by a very long stretch. Because of this gross oversimplification, I must wonder what else has has been approached in the same manner. The principles argued in the book I found to be in line with the claims, but I would strongly recommend the FT Guides series instead, possibly the Investing one by Glen Arnold.
