Review: A fascinating story of an Anglo American lady who married an Italian aristocrat and together they restored a decayed agricultural eastate in Southern Tusacany. She set up a school to educate the children of the farm workers where some Jewish children were sheltered during the German occupation of Italy.A fine book.

Review: There was an interesting story hidden in this mundane, plodding book. Iris lived in exciting times and was part of the Florentine British/American expatriate 'colony' in Florence. Raised by an eccentric neurotic mother, an only child half American half English, she married an Italian Count and lived through the 2nd WW in Italy. But by that time I had given up on this book. It is written in the 'end then this happened and then that happened' style of biography, offering no insight into the subject not giving appropriate context. Worst of all, I have never purchased a book with so many typos! There were basic mistakes on just about every page. I think the proofreader was having a bad day as I suspect that no more than a day was spent on this part of the production of this book. And a decent copy-editor would not have gone amiss. This book is a poor effort.

Description: Discover La Foce, the Renaissance villa and classically inspired twentieth-century garden, at the dawn of its hundredth anniversary | ??once a barren Tuscan estate brought to life through the extraordinary vision and determination of Iris and Antonio Origo. In 1924, English-born biographer and writer Iris Origo (1902-1988) and her husband, Antonio, purchased La Foce, a sprawling estate centered around a half-ruined fifteenth-century villa with a dream that was as ambitious as it was audacious. Guided by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, the Origos dedicated their lives to transforming an impoverished terrain into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards. With English architect Cecil Pinsent, they refurbished the house and designed an elegant terraced garden with box hedges, a rose garden, fountains, and a wisteria-covered pergola. The dramatic story of La Foce | ??from the taming of the wild valley and personal loss to wartime strife | ??is told by the Origos' granddaughter Katia Lysy, with reminiscences by Benedetta Origo, the couple's elder daughter. The letters and diaries of Iris Origo weave beautifully into a personal narrative of the creation of the property and the people behind it. Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldout annotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images of the creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

Description: The bestselling diaries of WWII in Tuscany, with a new introduction by writer and social historian Virginia Nicholson, and stunning rediscovered photographs At the height of the Second World War, Italy was being torn apart by German armies, civil war, and the eventual Allied invasion. In a corner of Tuscany, one woman - born in England, married to an Italian - kept a record of daily life in a country at war. Iris Origo's compellingly powerful diary, War in Val d' Orcia, is the spare and vivid account of what happened when a peaceful farming valley became a battleground. At great personal risk, the Origos gave food and shelter to partisans, deserters and refugees. They took in evacuees, and as the front drew closer they faced the knowledge that the lives of thirty-two small children depended on them. Origo writes with sensitivity and generosity, and a story emerges of human acts of heroism and compassion, and the devastation that war can bring.
