Review: Not the kind of book you’d buy for your sweet grandma for Christmas. Unit 731 is one of the most horrible things to have existed on planet. This is a fascinating recap on the evil things people can do for twisted purposes and how little value some people can place on human life. No matter where you live or what your background, this book will make you understand how things can always be worse. It is an important part of history unveiled and you must appreciate the witnesses for telling their story.

Review: Positive reader reviews and a foreword by an American history professor might convince buyers that this is a worthwhile purchase for those wishing to know more about Japan's WW2 research into chemical and biological warfare and human physiology, conducted on live humans. I'm sorry to say (having bought and read the book) that they would be wrong: the book is junk. The issues are too numerous to attempt to cover all of them but might be summed up with terms like sloppy, shallow, naive (in a writing sense) and amateur. The history itself gets only the thinnest of washes as facts and anecdotes are pasted in with frustratingly little evidence of continuity so that the reader never feels that they are making progress through a story of how the research came about, who the main military and civilian proponents were, what those people were like and what drove them, and what the experience was of the (mostly Chinese) human subjects and their communities Despite the very human nature of the story no real human experience comes through on either side of the line. The chief protagonist of the human research programme, Ishii Shiro, remains a carboard ghost about whom nothing is revealed, when what the reader wants to know is how a person can come to the belief that it is right to experiment on humans to further research into chemical and biological weapons. The impression throughout is of an author cutting and pasting from a scrapbook of third-hand stories, including descriptions of educational exhibitions on the subject in 1990s Japan, with the weakness of the book's content no more visible than in the later section of testimonies from those involved: some of the "testimonies" are actually the comments and reactions of people to seeing the exhibition. This is mush, not history. It's as if an author on the history of the Holocaust drew on the comments of tourists as they exited Dachau. I don't like to attack a book that might be well intentioned but when an important subject is presented in an almost unreadable format and Amazon reviewers hand out 4- and 5-star ratings like confetti I feel the need to give a more sober view and perhaps save at least a few prospective buyers their cash. Terrible history deserves brilliant books and this is not one of them.

Description: This is a riveting and disturbing account of the medical atrocities performed in China during WWII. Some of the cruelest deeds of Japan's war in Asia did not occur on the battlefield, but in quiet, antiseptic medical wards in obscure parts of China. Far from front lines and prying eyes, Japanese doctors and their assistants subjected human guinea pigs to gruesome medical experiments in the name of science and Japan's wartime chemical and biological warfare research. Author Hal Gold draws upon a wealth of sources to construct a portrait of the Imperial Japanese Army's most notorious medical unit, giving an overview of its history and detailing its most shocking activities. The book presents the words of former unit members themselves, taken from remarks they made at a traveling Unit 731 exhibition held in Japan in 1994-95. They recount vivid first-hand memories of what it was like to take part in horrific experiments on men, women and children, their motivations and reasons why they chose to speak about their actions all these years later. A new foreword by historian Yuma Totani examines the actions of Unit 731, the post-war response by the Allies and the lasting importance of the book. Japan's Infamous Unit 731 represents an essential addition to the growing body of literature on the still unfolding story of some of the most infamous war crimes in modem military history. By showing how the ethics of normal men and women, and even an entire profession, can be warped by the fire of war, this important book offers a window on a time of human madness and the hope that history will not be repeated.

He returns to a Spain that is rotten to the core, as gold from the Americas floods into the port of Seville, brought by the country's infamous treasure fleet. As various factions within the Court vie for supremacy, certain interests are creaming off undeclared profits from the galleons' cargo, thus depriving the royal treasury of its lifeblood. Indeed some of the booty is finding its way into the hands of the same rebel provinces Spain is fighting to suppress. The King and his most trusted advisor, the Count-Duke Olivares, have become aware of one such plot and have decided to teach the perpetrator a lesson. Price: £14.99

Description: Drafted into the SS-Totenkopf in 1939, Werner Kindler served with a motorised unit in Poland before, in May 1941, he was selected for the elite Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler. It was with the Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler that he participated in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union from June 1941. Werner's unit converted to a Panzer Grenadier formation in 1942, and he went on to fight at Kharkov and Kursk on the Eastern Front. Having transferred to the Western Front in 1944, Werner later fought in Belgium and France, in the Ardennes campaign, in Hungary and, finally, in Austria, Between 1941 and 1944 Waffen-SS Oberscharf hrer Werner Kindler took part in eighty-four days of close combat. As a result, he was awarded the Close Combat Clasp in Gold (for participation in more than fifty battles) on 1 April 1945 - being one of only 631 men who received this decoration. He was also awarded the German Cross in Gold, the Iron Cross First and Second Class, the Eastern Front Medal and the Gold Wound Badge, having been wounded six times in action. At the end of the war in Europe, Werner was one of the last men of the Leibstandarte-SS to surrender to the Americans. Obedient Unto Death is one of the most dramatic first-hand accounts to come out of the Second World War. It provides is an unparalleled insight into the reality of close combat on the Eastern Front, where infantrymen attacked tanks with hand grenades and limpet mines, as well as the creation and evolution of armoured forces during the Second World War.
