Description: The name of John Muir has come to stand for the protection of wild land and wilderness in both America and Britain. Born in Dunbar in the east of Scotland in 1838, Muir is famed as the father of American conservation, and as the first person to promote the idea of National Parks. Combining acute observation with a sense of inner discovery, Muir's writings of his travels through some of the greatest landscapes on Earth, including the Carolinas, Florida, Alaska and those lands which were to become the great National Parks of Yosemite and the Sierra Valley, raise an awareness of nature to a spiritual dimension. These journals provide a unique marriage of scientific survey of natural history with lyrical and often amusing anecdotes, retaining a freshness, intensity and brutal honesty which will amaze the modern reader. This collection, including the never-before-published Stickeen, presents the finest of Muir's writings, and imparts a rounded portrait of a man whose generosity, passion, discipline and vision are an inspiration to this day. Review: I am only beginning to explore the writings of John Muir and sense that this is just the start of a journey. His passion for nature and his insights into its mystical inter-connectedness are beautiful, and we need to be motivated and given hope by his example of fighting to create a space for wildness. Written a hundred years ago and yet somehow very up-to-date and highly recommended. I wrote this review to warn readers who are interested in particular parts of John Muir's writing. The current listing on Amazon (July 2012) is wrong. It describes the book as "Journeys in the Wilderness: A John Muir Reader: Includes My Boyhood and Youth, First Summer in the Sierra, 1000 Mile Walk, Stickeen and Travels in Alaska'. This IS NOT CORRECT. I ordered the book with a primary interest in '1000 Mile Walk' and it is not included, neither is 'Travels in Alaska' apart from the inclusion of Stickeen. So I would probably have gone for a different compilation if I'd known, though this edition, with an interesting introduction by Graham White, is attractively produced and I don't regret having it. For clarity, Journeys in the Wilderness: A John Muir Reader, published by Birlinn, includes: The Story of my Boyhood and Youth (complete) My First Summer in the Sierra (complete) The Mountains of California (selection) Our National Parks (selection) The Yosemite (selection) Stickeen (complete) Steep Trails (selection) And in case you hadn't noticed, the contents of 'Look Inside' refer to a different edition entitled 'The Wilderness Journals', also introduced by Graham White, published by Canongate but also seemingly available in a Kindle edition. AMENDMENT June 2013: I'm glad to see that the book details have now been updated and appear to be correct, as is the version on 'Look Inside'.

Review: All John Muir’s books are worth reading and this is a great collection, but the description clearly states “Travels in Alaska” and “1000 Mile Walk to the Gulf” are included, but they are not.

  • Waterstones Journeying with God in the Wilderness

    Price: £11.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Is there hope to be found in the wilderness? Jesus' forty days in the wilderness, which many Christians remember during Lent, echoes the story of God's people wandering for forty years in the wilderness. The book of Numbers tells of these wanderings but can be a difficult book of the Bible to get to grips with. Delving into this book alongside the New Testament and reflecting with prayers and questions, this daily Lent devotional explores how the Israelites' wilderness journey can speak to us in our daily struggles and challenges today. Through all the ups-and-downs of their wilderness adventure, we join with God's people as they learn to see the sure and certain fulfilment of God's future promises in the book of Numbers. We discover God's abiding presence through, as well as in, the wilderness. We see how the wilderness points us forward to the Promised Land, and to Jesus as the One who brings us into the fulness of God's promises. With readings from Numbers and from the New Testament each day, Journeying with God in the Wilderness guides us through an often-neglected book of the Bible, helping us to make sense of the Old Testament through the lens of the New and giving us Christ-centred hope. Journeying with God in the Wilderness is written as an aide to the spiritual journey of faith and can be read either individually or in small groups. It will encourage and inspire anyone feeling lost or bewildered on life's journey, or who wants to join in with the long Christian tradition of Lent as a wilderness experience, by showing them the fulfilment of the promises of God to his people in the wilderness. Join Mark Broadway this Lent and find hope for your wilderness journey.
