Review: This very recent translation of the Old Testament offers a great supplement to the translations of the Bible which I use for study and for ministry. It is interesting to contrast certain interpretations of individual words and phrases in comparison with AKJV, NKJV, ESV, NIV and NLT. Above all though, it sets in place the divisions of the Old Testament amongst the law, the prophets and the [wisdom] writings. Interestingly, the book of Daniel is classed within the writings, not within the prophets. This book has reframed my Old Testament thinking. Well worth the modest outlay.

Review: My rating is purely for the askewed pages,???? not the content, which is excellent??Numerous slanted pages (about 90%). A shame really. I would have sent it back if I had noticed earlier, and bought another one, hoping that this one is a one-off????????

Description: Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as the standard English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the JPS TANAK Hhas been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike. The JPS TANAKH is an entirely original translation of the Holy Scriptures into contemporary English, based on the Masoretic (the traditional Hebrew) text. It is the culmination of three decades of collaboration by academic scholars and rabbis, representing the three largest branches of organized Judaism in the United States. Not since the third century b.c. e., when 72 elders of the tribes of Israel created the Greek translation of Scriptures known as the Septuagint has such a broad-based committee of Jewish scholars produced a major Bible translation. In executing this monumental task, the translators made use of the entire range of biblical interpretation, ancient and modern, Jewish and non-Jewish. They drew upon the latest findings in linguistics and archaeology, as well as the work of early rabbinic and medieval commentators, grammarians, and philologians. The resulting text is a triumph of literary style and biblical scholarship, unsurpassed in accuracy and clarity. Ebook versions of this title may be purchased from most ebook vendors. Description: A leading biblical scholar offers a powerful reexamination of the Bible's origins and its connections to human suffering Human trauma gave birth to the Bible, suggests eminent religious scholar David Carr. The Bible's ability to speak to suffering is a major reason why the sacred texts of Judaism and Christianity have retained their relevance for thousands of years. In his fascinating and provocative reinterpretation of the Bible's origins, the author tells the story of how the Jewish people and Christian community had to adapt to survive multiple catastrophes and how their holy scriptures both reflected and reinforced each religion's resilient nature. Carr's thought-provoking analysis demonstrates how many of the central tenets of biblical religion, including monotheism and the idea of suffering as God's retribution, are factors that provided Judaism and Christianity with the strength and flexibility to endure in the face of disaster. In addition, the author explains how the Jewish Bible was deeply shaped by the Jewish exile in Babylon, an event that it rarely describes, and how the Christian Bible was likewise shaped by the unspeakable shame of having a crucified savior. Description: This book offers an articulate, readable, balanced introduction to Jewish history, one that could be utilized in the classroom or for individual enrichment. | ?? Marie Nuar, Reading Religion Examining the entire span of Jewish history by focusing on thirty pivotal moments in the Jewish people's experience from biblical times through the present | ??essentially the most important events in the life of the Jewish people | ?? Turning Points in Jewish Historyprovides 'the big picture": both a broad and a deep understanding of the Jewish historical experience. Zeroing in on eight turning points in the biblical period, four in Hellenistic-Roman times, five in the Middle Ages, and thirteen in modernity, Marc J. Rosenstein elucidates each formative event with a focused history, a timeline, a primary text with commentary as an intimate window into the period, and a discussion of its legacy for subsequent generations. Along the way he candidly analyzes various controversies and schisms arising from Judaism's encounters with power, powerlessness, exile, messianism, rationalism, mysticism, catastrophe, modernity, nationalism, feminism, and more. The book's thirty distinct and logically connected events lend themselves to a full course or to customized classes on specific turning points. Discussion questions for every chapter (some in print, more online) facilitate reflection and continuing conversation. .
