Review: I’m not always a fan of list-type books (‘100 Places to See Before You Die’ etc), because they are usually quite scant on information, or just fairly predictable in terms of the recommendations being made. This Epic Hikes book is a bit different though, essentially being a series of mini essays from people who’ve actually done the hikes in question. Because there are multiple authors the writing style and quality does vary a bit, but that’s actually part of the charm for me. I also love the theming (for example walks based around geology, wine, modern architecture, via Ferrata, pilgrimages, canal towpaths and so on). Good range of difficulties, from challenging peaks to easy urban. The maps aren’t detailed enough find your way, so the book serves as initial inspiration, and you’ll be wanting to top up with OS maps or the like for when actually out and about. But I was genuinely inspired by the writing and now really want to do a Danish design walk, forest bathing and Dutch windmill trail. It’s specific to Europe which is also great given the current high cost of long haul flights, and the remaining COVID restrictions in some Asian destinations - you would be able to plan most of these walks without much trepidation or risk. Also recommended as a Christmas fireside read when you just want a little bit of escapism.
