  • Waterstones Carmarthen Through Time

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The roots of Carmarthen, claimed to be the oldest town in Wales, go back to the time of the Roman occupation founded around AD 75 when it was called Moridunum, the civitas capital of the Celtic Demetae (Britons) tribe. It can also claim to have one of the oldest theatres in country with one of only three surviving Roman amphitheatres in Wales. There are strong Arthurian legends connecting Merlin the Wizard to Carmarthen, but it was the Normans who recognised the town's strategic location and built the first castle here in around 1094. Destroyed by the Welsh, defences were constructed in 1223 making Carmarthen the first walled town in Wales, but not sufficiently strong enough to prevent Owain Glyndwr sacking both town and castle in 1405. The final defences, the Bulwarks, were built to defend the town by the Royalist during the Civil War of the 1640s. Carmarthen Through Time offers the reader a real insight into the ways in which the town subsequently grew to prominence during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a business centre for agriculture and associated trades, including that of woollen manufacture. Follow well-known historian Keith Morgan as he guides us through the eighteenth century, which saw Carmarthen enter the industrialised age and became an important port exporting coal, iron and tinplate throughout the world, right up to date when following regeneration, Carmarthen has become a large business and shopping centre for the county.

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Aberystwyth started life as a garrison town for the Normans in 1277. For centuries fishing, sea faring, lead mining and agriculture were the mainstays of the local economy. Today's vitality originates from a few tumultuous years during the 1860s which changed Aberystwyth from being a remote market town, port and watering-hole for the wealthier classes to a bustling holiday resort with a new university. With a mile of promenade, beaches, a harbour, ruined castle, medieval street plan, University, National Library of Wales, narrow gauge and funicular railways Aberystwyth is a town of great character and charm. Using images of Aberystwyth dating from a hundred and fifty years ago until the present day the reader is taken on a tour of the town taking in the promenade, outlying districts and the town centre. • Waterstones Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion

    Price: £60.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This sixth volume of the Buildings of Wales series covers two counties, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion (formerly Cardiganshire) in the South-west of Wales. Like the same authors' Pembrokeshire, the volume covers an architecture still little known, but encompassing a sweep from prehistoric chambered tombs to the high technology of the world's largest single-span glasshouse. The two counties have deeply rural hinterlands shading into wild and empty upland, bare of settlements but rich in the relics of lost industry. The isolated churches and nonconformist chapels are given knowledgeable attention in the comprehensive gazetteer, which gives full coverage to the magnificent castles of Carmarthenshire. There are detailed accounts of the varied small towns of the two counties, from formal late-Georgian Aberaeron to the quiet charm of Laugharne, winding down to its estuary. Aberystwyth with its promenade, university and National Library, joins industrial Llanelli and county-town Carmarthen in the wealth and variety of its late Victorian chapels. An introduction with valuable specialist contributions sets the buildings in context.
