Review: I bought this book to read with my father who is losing cognitive abilities slowly in his 80’s I was a bit put off by the only review but proceeded as I thought it would interest him. The book is brilliant factual with interesting images Anyone would enjoy it and I spent a wonderful hour with my Dad. It isn’t condescending in anyway And I liked it so much I went and purchased a number of other books from Pictures to Share.

Review: Very few images of industrial working life, text and language quite patronising even for those with dementia and images not great quality. More images and no text would have been better to stimulate memory and communication when looking at together.

Description: 1950s Ireland was the age of De Valera and John Charles Mc Quaid. It was the age before television, Vatican II, and home central heating. A time when motor cars and public telephones had wind-up handles, when boys wore short trousers and girls wore ribbons, when nuns wore white bonnets and priests wore black hats in church. To the young people of today, the 1950s seem like another age. But for those who played, learned and worked at this time, this era feels like just yesterday. This delightful collection of memories will appeal to all who grew up in 1950s Ireland and will jog memories about all aspects of life as it was. Description: As Britain moved from austerity to prosperity in the 1950s and 1960s, it became clear that British Railways needed to modernise its equipment and rationalise its network if it was to hold its own in the face of growing competition from road and air transport. After attempting to maintain pre-war networks and technology in the 1950s, a reversal of policy in the 1960s brought line closures, new liveries and the last breath of steam, as Dr Beeching and his successors strove to break even and build a new business from the old. From Britannia to the 'Blue Pullman', Evening Star to Inter-City, Greg Morse takes us through this turbulent twenty-year period, which started with drab prospects and ended with BR poised to launch the fastest diesel-powered train in the world. • Waterstones Norwich in the 1960s

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Changed by the 1950s, Norwich was to alter even more during the 1960s. Increased traffic would be met with widened roads and a new flyover, while London Street became pedestrians only. After centuries of trading there the cattle market would move out of the city centre. Bigger buildings changed its skyline and the city gained a university and a new library. THE BEATLES PLAYED HERE, SECRET CHEMICAL TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT THERE AND PLANS TO MODERNISE WERE EVERYWHERE. In this sequel to his hugely popular book Norwich in the 1950s, Pete Goodrum takes a fascinating look at the ten years in which the baby boomers came into their own. As the fifties faded away and sixties style arrived, this was the decade that altered the face of the city. Waterstones Norwich in the 1960s - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
