Review: Whoever eats the flesh if a mermaid will be granted eternal life... so long as they survive the process. Our two protagonists are immortal wanderers. In the course of their travels they meet others who have experimented with eternity. Really, the feeling is of a 1980's TV show. It feels epidodic, like there's a mystery and a monster every week. And I mean that I a good way. Because of the long lives of the characters the past and present often intersect in interesting ways. For me Rumiko Takahashi's artwork had a classic vibe. There are bold lines and expressive characters. There is a cartoony edge to her style that belies a darkness of tone in Mermaid saga. There are two volumes and I recommend them both. As I said, this feels episodic and there is little emphaisi on overarching plot. That said, I never felt this was a problem. Overally this is a highly enjoyable mystery-horror adventure series.
