Review: The first time I stumbled across the work of David Grove was his mention in Business NLP for Dummies which neatly slots his unique syntax model between the meta and milton models, i.e. in a chunking across movement rather than one of chunking down or up. Lynne Cooper, the author, no coincidence, is a symbolic modeller and clean language pioneer but little did I then get a sense of the origins of the model and where it was being taken by Lawley & Tompkins - which incidentally bears a loose resemblance to Joseph Campbell’s monomyth stages of separation, initiation and return. The implicit dynamics of symbolic modelling could easily correspond to Mcregor’s (1960) x/y theory to explain the interaction of a heart-based transformation process (i.e. autonomy of an x axis) with a more regulatory head-based calculus (y axis). For example, the heart purpose of the book is covered in Part Three which details the five generative stages (not remedial) and starts with where the magic begins for the client - entry into the world of metaphor (S1) and the developing sense of symbolic perceptions (S2); then next, the organising logic of symbolic patterns across perceptions which are realised (S3). Once the ‘metaphor landscape’ has been established a series of approaches help to encourage the conditions for transformation (S4) by: chunking down (focusing), chunking up (altitude), chunking across (band-widthing), temporal lengthening (before/after movement), identifying logical conditions necessary for change (especially by talking to the metaphors) and introducing a resource symbol as a catalyst. Maturing (S5), the final stage, acknowledges what has been learnt. Grove’s 3-part full syntax of clean language is the glue that holds the system together, i.e. “And [client’s words/non-verbals] … And when/as [client’s words/ non-verbals] … [clean question]?” (which takes the last verbal/non verbal description to inform the client’s words). Strangely, applying a systematic framework over a metaphoric landscape might seem somewhat counter-intuitive; but to the client this approach helps to direct attention to their perspective of idiosyncratic time, space and form; and importantly divests the therapist from any tendency towards I-ness and “you” attributions. It is also said making professional boundaries implicit in the language minimises any influence from the facilitator’s map of the world to the point the facilitator may even cease to exist! A neat trick indeed and one wonders how much the techniques of hypnotism influenced Grove’s understanding in adopting a repetitive and consistent syntax. Did Metaphors in Mind say miracles can actually happen? Well almost... Lawley & Tompkins states: “even after years of facilitating clients to self-model, we still find something magical and sacred about the moment when a binding pattern transforms...we are grateful to be working alongside the progressive arrow of evolution.” In order to do this be prepared to go beyond the sensory logic of cause-effect and conceptual logic of proposition into world of inherent symbolic logic. Finally, a big aha moment for me was the observation that metaphors are the fabric that makes up the ‘structure’ of NLP’s Magic 1 (1975), and behind the ‘hypnotic techniques’ in Patterns 1 (1975) and underlying the ‘strategies’ in Subjective Experience (1980). The journey which awaits the self-modeller is like physicalising your way through the riddles of a real Escape Room while inadvertently releasing your Self from your psychological binds. This book might then be a real TV/filmscriptwriter’s dream too!

Review: Many books on metaphor are lists, stories and anecdotes. What sets this book apart is that it delves into the many ways in which the idea of metaphor can be applied. It is particularly instructive in teaching you how to get the most out of the different ways in which a client might try to articulate a problem: a glance, a look, a sound, a gesture, a word etc. It teaches you how you can then use that initial opening, that 'entry point' into the client's world, and broaden it out through 'clean language' (i.e. communicating ideas without disrupting the client's model of reality) and a structured format for building on small cues. A useful set of skills to have. Therapists familiar with Milton Erickson's ideas should appreciate this guide.

Description: People use metaphors every time they speak. Some of those metaphors are literary - devices for making thoughts more vivid or entertaining. But most are much more basic than that - they're metaphors we live by, metaphors we use without even realizing we're using them. In this book, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson suggest that these basic metaphors not only affect the way we communicate ideas, but actually structure our perceptions and understandings from the beginning. Bringing together the perspectives of linguistics and philosophy, Lakoff and Johnson offer an intriguing and surprising guide to some of the most common metaphors and what they can tell us about the human mind. And for this new edition, they supply an afterword both extending their arguments and offering a fascinating overview of the current state of thinking on the subject of the metaphor. Brand: Waterstones

Description: Covering a range of metaphors from a diverse field of sciences, from cell and molecular biology to evolution, ecology, and biomedicine, Understanding Metaphors in the Life Sciences explores the positive and negative implications of the widespread use of metaphors in the biological and life sciences. From genetic codes, programs, and blueprints, to cell factories, survival of the fittest, the tree of life, selfish genes, and ecological niches, to genome editing with CRISPR's molecular scissors, metaphors are ubiquitous and vital components of the modern life sciences. But how exactly do metaphors help scientists to understand the objects they study? How can they mislead both scientists and laypeople alike? And what should we all understand about the implications of science's reliance on metaphorical speech and thought for objective knowledge and adequate public policy informed by science? This book will literally help you to better understand the metaphorical dimensions of science.

Description: History, Metaphors, and Fables collects the central writings by Hans Blumenberg and covers topics such as on the philosophy of language, metaphor theory, non-conceptuality, aesthetics, politics, and literary studies. This landmark volume demonstrates Blumenberg's intellectual breadth and gives an overview of his thematic and stylistic range over four decades. Blumenberg's early philosophy of technology becomes tangible, as does his critique of linguistic perfectibility and conceptual thought, his theory of history as successive concepts of reality, his anthropology, or his studies of literature. History, Metaphors, Fables allows readers to discover a master thinker whose role in the German intellectual post-war scene can hardly be overestimated.
