Review: We bought this book for our 'level 6' class because Mrs Sedgwick's mum (who is a librarian) said it was well-written and demanding. However, had I just seen it in the library I wouldn't even have read the blurb...but as it turns out, it is an amazing story and I am so glad that we got the chance to give it a try. Overall, it is about a torn family who are grieving the death of Damian and Anthony's mum (we assume from cancer, but the book isn't clear on that). It also has other meanings such as the fact that even though you may have all the things you think you WANT, money cannot buy you the things you NEED. When a young boy finds a bag of money at the time in which the currency is changing to Euros, so it only has value for 17 more days, he and his brother have to spend quickly. Damian thinks it is a gift from God and needs to be spent doing good; Anthony, his brother, prefers to indulge his taste in extravagance and real estate! Somehow, through a series of exciting adventures, Damian brings the family back together and they all discover that family and friends matter more than any amount of cash! Personally, I would give this book five stars. Well done, Frank Cottrell Boyce - let's have a few more books. EH

Review: My son, who is 11, and I read books together by passing the Kindle between us every few pages. We'd read Cosmic, by the same author and although that runs out of steam a little towards the end it was a mostly captivating read. When we finished it, we started The Millions; the premise of two young boys living with their widowed father in relatively poor conditions finding a massive sum of money is compelling and the characters are tangible at first. However, the story just seems to stumble along without ever gathering any sense of momentum. The constant references to saints and religiosity really frustrated my son and I - we began just skipping the paragraphs where they came up - sometimes it was entire pages. It really was a done to death by about a third of the way through the book and then the middle third just doesn't seem to go anywhere. It was like the same pitfalls were being repeated daily by the main protagonists and we were left wondering if the story was ever going to go anywhere. Jaded, we parked it over the Xmas holidays and tried to pick it up again in the new year. Unfortunately, returning to the constant references to saints and the fantasies where they appeared, I could see that my son was not enjoying the tale and as much as I like to complete a book we decided that we'd had enough. If you're deeply religious and want a gateway for indoctrination into the wonderful world of Catholicism for impressionable young readers then this might be worth your while if you can handle the guilt of the inappropriate adult references. Otherwise, over The Millions I'd highly recommend Cosmic instead - it's laugh out loud funny and poignant in places with a far more engaging story.
