Review: A really great nostalgic read with loads of 90’s pop culture references, it is a classic vampire story but with a modern twist, I really enjoyed it. Mina has travelled to stay with her estranged sister, Libby in New Orleans, their mother went missing a year before and their relationship has been strained. There are the roommates, Jared ( his relationship with Mina becomes very complicated) and Lucas (a quiet artist or so he seems) and lastly Libby’s girlfriend Della. They all work at a mansion run by Thandie where they give horror tours and then the murders start and they get pulled into it especially when Libby become the main suspect. This was a really fun read that felt like Buffy or The Lost Boys, it was a really easy read with a gothic feel and although the deaths were a little gruesome this is low level horror but well written and I really enjoyed the descriptions of New Orleans, worth reading.

Review: I enjoyed the story but it felt like it was just treading water for the first 60%. The ending was great though and really held my interest once I got into that last 40% of the book!

The classroom is full of laughter, friendly faces and fun things to do, but the only word Mina can understand is her name. As she listens to stories and songs, chatter and instructions, Mina's understanding steadily grows. Then one day, Mina realises that this language now belongs to her, and she belongs to this new world. And she's ready to welcome others in. Mina Belongs Here is a heartfelt and uplifting story of a migrant experience and discovering a sense of belonging through shared words. Description: There's an empty notebook lying on the table in the moonlight. It's been there for an age. I keep on saying that I'll write a journal. So I'll start right here, right now. I open the book and write the very first words: My name is Mina and I love the night. Then what shall I write? I can't just write that this happened then this happened then this happened to boring infinitum. I'll let my journal grow just like the mind does, just like a tree or a beast does, just like life does. Why should a book tell a tale in a dull straight line? And so Mina writes and writes in her notebook, and here is her journal, Mina's life in Mina's own words: her stories and dreams, experiences and thoughts, her scribblings and nonsense, poems and songs. Her vivid account of her vivid life. In this stunning book, David Almond revisits Mina before she has met Michael, before she has met Skellig. Shortlisted for the 2012 Carnegie Medal. Description: For generations, deadly storms have ravaged Mina's homeland. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curse them with death and despair. To appease him, each year a maiden is thrown into the sea, in the hopes that one day the 'true bride' will be chosen and end the suffering. Many believe Shim Cheong - Mina's brother's beloved - to be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is sacrificed, Mina's brother follows her, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong's stead. Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina finds the Sea God, trapped in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man and a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits, Mina sets out to wake him and bring an end to the storms once and for all. But she doesn't have much time: a human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking.
