Review: Starts with a mixed bag of people snowed up in train caught in a snowdrift. Some get out and stumble across a remote house with fires burning but no one at home. Much better than most of its type with interesting characters, plots and sub-plots, really absorbing. Only gripe is the cover on this edition which features a 19th Century American train in a very English 20th Century story!

Review: This looked like a good buy for Christmas. A bunch of people seeking refuge from the snow in a deserted country house. Sadly it was not for me. It takes a very long while to establish who it is who has been murdered and as we have no knowledge of what they were like or why they were killed for very many pages, it was rather difficult to care who had done the bumping off. I read quite a lot of the Golden Age detective stories and they simply reflect the society, the class system, of the time. Generally speaking, no point in getting agitated about this - it's just the way things were. However in this particular book the initial (mild) love interest centres on a young gentleman and a girl (who is not a lady in the context of the 1930's). He abruptly switches allegiance when a young gel arrives on the scene, who obviously is a lady, in a way that I found quite remarkably ill bred... All in all, I only finished this book on the grounds that 'I've paid for it, so I'll read it...'.
