Description: In the 1960s the citizens of Nottingham saw the greatest change in the city in the twentieth century. In the previous decade, the city planners envisaged a dual carriageway which would encircle the centre of Nottingham and they began by building a new highway from Castle Boulevard to Friar Lane. Many slum properties were demolished in the area around Walnut Tree Lane near the castle, but a number of historic buildings were also swept away in the construction of the new road - notably Collin's Almshouses and St Nicholas' Rectory. The construction of the Broad Marsh Shopping Centre, complementing the Victoria Centre, was equally contentious. Featuring over 200 photographs from archives and local people's collections revealing the Nottingham of yesteryear, this book is guaranteed to be of interest to anyone who has ever lived in or visited this great city. Description: Nottingham, in common with many other English cities, experienced great changes during the twentieth century. This book illustrates the major buildings and many of the minor structures which were lost during that period. The Blitz of the Second World War destroyed a number of important buildings, but most of the losses were the result of either slum clearance, road-widening, redevelopment or areas of rebuilding. Churches were demolished when attendances declined, and cinemas were pulled down of converted to other uses in the 1960s when audiences began to dwindle. Dozens of pubs, many of them with opulent Victorian edifices, were sacrificed when whole districts were cleared of sub-standard dwellings, and the construction of Nottingham's two major shopping centres were both controversial, each causing the loss of historic buildings. This book will revive memories of much-loved buildings in the city, and provide a valuable record of what has been lost. • Waterstones Nottingham From Old Photographs

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The City of Nottingham as we know it today began life as an Anglo-Saxon settlement. By the late nineteenth century, Nottingham had developed into a thriving city. Through photographs, documents and other images, Nottingham From Old Photographs reflects the change from the early settlement of Tigguo Cobauc (a place of cave dwellings) to one of the leading cities in England. Most of the photographs and research within these pages have come from the collection of the late Paul Nix of the Nottingham Hidden History Team (NHHT). The work of the NHHT exceeds well over forty years. Combined with the author's own collection and never-before-published documents, images and photographs from the Paul Nix Collection, we see a new side to Nottingham, an ever-changing city.

Description: In 1897, Nottingham was granted a city charter to coincide with the celebrations accompanying Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. By then Nottingham already had a history going back to at least the ninth century when the settlement was referred to as 'Tigguo Cobauc', which literally translates as the 'House of Caves'. The Victorian and Edwardian era saw great changes to Nottingham. Rapid growth in its population meant the town had to adapt. Once known as the 'Garden Town', Nottingham quickly saw an urban transformation in areas such as housing, industry and transport. Much of Nottingham's heritage was lost to make way for progress, even more so with the Enclosure Act of 1845. This book, through photographs, postcards, documents and other images, reflects the changes Nottingham has seen from a beautiful garden town to one of the Britain's leading cities. We can trace both the architectural development and the social impact brought about by these changes. This book records the historical changes by comparing Victorian and Edwardian photographs with their modern-day counterparts. • Waterstones Nottingham The Postcard Collection

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Nottingham was established as a settlement even before the Normans built their castle there, but the castle became an important stronghold and the medieval town grew around both it and the original settlement in today's Lace Market area. The castle was later rebuilt but some remains of medieval Nottingham can still be found today, including two of the oldest public houses in the country, Ye Olde Salutation Inn and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. Lacemaking and other industries later left their mark on the city, and the nineteenth century and early twentieth century was an era of great civic pride in the city as the Council House was built, major railway stations and theatres opened and the city expanded its boundaries. In Nottingham: The Postcard Collection author Alan Spree has drawn on a remarkable selection of old postcards to give a pictorial record of life in Nottingham from the late nineteenth century to the early 1950s. Although much of Nottingham has changed over the years, many landmarks have remained and will be familiar today. The postcards show the changes to Nottingham's fabric and its community adapting and changing over the course of this period. This fascinating collection of images will be of interest to those who have lived in Nottingham or know it well.
