Description: From wicked queens, beautiful princesses, elves, monsters, and goblins to giants, glass slippers, poisoned apples, magic keys, and mirrors, the characters and images of fairy tales have cast a spell over readers and audiences, both adults and children, for centuries. These fantastic stories have travelled across cultural borders, and been passed on from generation to generation, ever-changing, renewed with each re-telling. Few forms of literature have greater power to enchant us and rekindle our imagination than a fairy tale. But what is a fairy tale? Where do they come from and what do they mean? What do they try and communicate to us about morality, sexuality, and society? The range of fairy tales stretches across great distances and time; their history is entangled with folklore and myth, and their inspiration draws on ideas about nature and the supernatural, imagination and fantasy, psychoanalysis, and feminism. Marina Warner has loved fairy tales over a long writing life, and she explores here a multitude of tales through the ages, their different manifestations on the page, the stage, and the screen. From the phenomenal rise of Victorian and Edwardian literature to contemporary children's stories, Warner unfolds a glittering array of examples, from classics such as Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and The Sleeping Beauty, the Grimm Brothers' Hansel and Gretel, and Hans Andersen's The Little Mermaid, to modern-day realizations including Walt Disney's Snow White and gothic interpretations such as Pan's Labyrinth. In ten succinct chapters, Marina Warner digs into a rich hoard of fairy tales in their brilliant and fantastical variations, in order to define a genre and evaluate a literary form that keeps shifting through time and history. Her book makes a persuasive case for fairy tale as a crucial repository of human understanding and culture. Waterstones Once Upon a Time - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Review: It's a small book, so don't expect a deep academic review of all fairy and folk tales. Take the sub-title at face vales: "A short history of fairy tale." I found Marina Warner's conversational style perfect for an overview and introduction to the subject, and I liked the way that she has broken the work out into sections not just focusing on the main themes of fairy stories, but also the environments in which we encounter them. Just as thought-provoking as the longer and heavier works by Zipes et al., this book is essential reading for anyone seriously investigating the field. And as a pocket-sized edition, it is a perfect travel companion! Just reading the Prologue had the effect of triggering two new stories for my next collection.

Review: This was an utterly disappointing book. I was expecting a fairly impartial exposition of the history of fairy tales. In my view this should have encompassed a discussion of what fairy tales are, when and where they originated, how they have been developed by different societies through time and what these developments tell us about how different societies have approached the worlds of imagination and childhood. To this end the current Wikipedia article was more informative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_tale. What I found was an extremely basic discussion of only some of the above themes, filtered through a specific kind of feminist/socialist prism. The rest of this short book is occupied by a number of more abstract meditations about how fairy tales have been used by psychologists, feminists and other activists. I found the section about feminism particularly heavy going (“Fairy tales were denounced as a blunt tool of patriarchy, the bourgeoisie, cosmetic surgeons, the fashion industry, and psychoanalysts bent on curbing girls’ energies and desires.”). I have noticed that some of the societies that I am familiar with (for instance Italy, Germany and Britain) have very different attitudes to fairy tales and how they should be presented to children. For instance, in Germany editions of the Grimm fairy tales intended for children are rigorously unabridged (for instance see here: http://www.urachhaus.de/buecher/9783825178239/die-100-schoensten-maerchen-der-brueder-grimm and here: http://www.thienemann-esslinger.de/esslinger/buecher/buchdetailseite/die-schoensten-maerchen-der-brueder-grimm-isbn-978-3-480-22754-9/) and this is so important to the consumer that the fact is underlined in the book description. In the UK, on the other hand, no such attention is paid to the text: the equivalent collections translated into English have been abridged (see here: http://www.florisbooks.co.uk/book/Jacob-and-Wilhelm-Grimm/Illustrated+Treasury+of+Grimm%27s+Fairy+Tales/9780863159473 and here: http://www.florisbooks.co.uk/book/Jacob-%26-Wilhelm-Grimm/Favourite+Grimm%27s+Tales/9780863153181) and the fact is not even stated. The only way I know that they are abridged is because I contacted the publisher (who incidentally also refused to divulge who the translator is). My hope was that a history of the fairy tale would give me some additional understanding of these dynamics – but this has not been the case. I was also disappointed by the very superficial discussion about fairy tales in film. In my view the fascinating questions relate to how fairy tales (in their written form) encourage children to freely develop their imagination, and how film versions of the fairy tales are antithetical to this. The only mention of this theme appears in one line on pg 165 (“so much is being done for us by animators and filmmakers, there is no room for personal imaginings”) because the author seems to be much more interested in how delightfully films have been twisting fairy tales (completely beyond recognition, in my view) to suit our “times of conflict, eco-disaster, and other difficulties”. Because – apparently – in the times of the Grimm brothers (or Perrault or Andersen) there were no conflicts, eco-disasters or other difficulties.

Description: What is the meaning of time? Do we have an internal clock? Can time speed up or slow down? The Psychology of Time considers how we define, describe, and experience time. From a discussion of how our language around time is dependent on metaphor, to the role of biology in controlling our bodily experience of time, the book delves into how the finitude of life is a given human experience. It looks at how we reflect on the passage of time throughout our lives, and how our experience of time can be influenced by diverse factors including our age, gender, health, and culture. Description: What is time? The 5th-century philosopher St Augustine famously said that he knew what time was, so long as no one asked him. Is time a fourth dimension similar to space or does it flow in some sense? And if it flows, does it make sense to say how fast? Does the future exist? Is time travel possible? Why does time seem to pass in only one direction? These questions and others are among the deepest and most subtle that one can ask, but Introducing Time presents them - many for the first time - in an easily accessible, lucid and engaging manner, wittily illustrated by Ralph Edney.

Description: Time is ticking. That's what it does. Or at least that's how we represent what we don't understand. For physics, time is a byproduct of so called space-time, elastic goo created at the very moment that something came from nothing; the moment eternity stopped and the universe began. For geology, time is 4.5 billion years of compression and catastrophe. For biology time is 3.5 billion years of diversification and now the urgency of the sixth extinction. For anthropology time is 150 thousand years since mitochondrial Eve walked out of the rift valley in Ethiopia. For historians, time begins with Herodotus (484 BC) and ends, or rather doesn't, with Fukuyama's The End of History. For architecture time is ruination. For landscape architecture time is ephemerality, entropy, and growth. For all of us time is running out. Waterstones LA+ Time - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: Time is the most common noun in the English language yet philosophers and scientists don't agree about what time actually is or how to define it. Perhaps this is because the brain tells, represents and perceives time in multiple ways. Dean Buonomano investigates the relationship between the brain and time, looking at what time is, why it seems to speed up or slow down and whether our sense that time flows is an illusion. Buonomano presents his theory of how the brain tells time, and illuminates such concepts as free will, consciousness, space-time and relativity from the perspective of a neuroscientist. Drawing on physics, evolutionary biology and philosophy, he reveals that the brain's ultimate purpose may be to predict the future-and thus that your brain is a time machine.
