Review: This book starts with some 40 pages of introduction and comments by the translator, Peter MacMillan, and ends with about 130 pages of commentary on the poems, one by one. This latter section also includes a separate section with the romanised versions of each poem. The in-between pages contain the 100 short poems, each occupying a small fraction of the page allocated to it. I would have preferred each of the poems to be given first in the Japanese original, then in the romanised version, and finally in English translation. Any student of Japanese buying this book (and perhaps not many non-students of Japanese would be tempted to buy it) would want the original to be included, and the translation to help them understand, and to enjoy the meaning in a poetic English version.
