Review: I was sent a copy of this book for review. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. Jay Reguero, a Filipino-American teenager, should be excited about his acceptance into the University of Michigan but it feels hollow. He didn’t get into an Ivy League school, he feels he has disappointed his parents and he hasn’t even declared his major as he has no clue what he wants to study. His plans to flake out and play video games over spring break are wrecked when he hears that his Filipino cousin Jun has been killed in the Philippines by someone due to President Duterte's inhumane policies in his war on drugs. Jay lost contact with Jun 4 years ago when he stopped responding to his letters. They had been close as children but Jay wrote replied less as he got older. He feels guilt for cutting contact and for the fact that Jun's family in the Philippines refuse to talk about him, what happened or even acknowledges he existed. He travels to the Philippines to find out answers to what happened to Jun and reconnect with his extended family. When he arrives he must contend with his lack of knowledge of his Filipino heritage, language or history. He is met with a wall of silence regarding Jun and his death. Jay decides that he must uncover what happened to Jun in the 4 years since he last spoke to him. This leads to revelations about Jun that don’t correspond with how Jay sees him and forces him to confront aspects of Jun's life that are hard to accept. One way or the other he will expose the truth of what happened to his cousin even the parts that he had a hand in. ????????????????????. A compelling and immersive read. The story brings the reader into Jay's life and by extension into his rediscovery of his Filipino culture. It also gave raw and honest commentary on life in the Philippines for the poor and forgotten members of their society. We learn alongside Jay about Duterte's iron fist over his people and how his crackdown on drugs has affected many lives and ended so many others. A powerful story that has an emotional resonance that stays with you long after you have finished the book.

Review: This wasn't as great as I hoped it would be. I wanted to read this so badly and was stoked beyond words when I got approved for the ARC on Netgalley. I can't say one thing that didn't hit the mark with me, but several little things. But I didn't hate it, far from it. I just didn't love it with my whole heart and soul like I wanted and hoped I would.
