Review: I was sent a copy of this book for review. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. Jay Reguero, a Filipino-American teenager, should be excited about his acceptance into the University of Michigan but it feels hollow. He didn’t get into an Ivy League school, he feels he has disappointed his parents and he hasn’t even declared his major as he has no clue what he wants to study. His plans to flake out and play video games over spring break are wrecked when he hears that his Filipino cousin Jun has been killed in the Philippines by someone due to President Duterte's inhumane policies in his war on drugs. Jay lost contact with Jun 4 years ago when he stopped responding to his letters. They had been close as children but Jay wrote replied less as he got older. He feels guilt for cutting contact and for the fact that Jun's family in the Philippines refuse to talk about him, what happened or even acknowledges he existed. He travels to the Philippines to find out answers to what happened to Jun and reconnect with his extended family. When he arrives he must contend with his lack of knowledge of his Filipino heritage, language or history. He is met with a wall of silence regarding Jun and his death. Jay decides that he must uncover what happened to Jun in the 4 years since he last spoke to him. This leads to revelations about Jun that don’t correspond with how Jay sees him and forces him to confront aspects of Jun's life that are hard to accept. One way or the other he will expose the truth of what happened to his cousin even the parts that he had a hand in. ????????????????????. A compelling and immersive read. The story brings the reader into Jay's life and by extension into his rediscovery of his Filipino culture. It also gave raw and honest commentary on life in the Philippines for the poor and forgotten members of their society. We learn alongside Jay about Duterte's iron fist over his people and how his crackdown on drugs has affected many lives and ended so many others. A powerful story that has an emotional resonance that stays with you long after you have finished the book.

Review: This wasn't as great as I hoped it would be. I wanted to read this so badly and was stoked beyond words when I got approved for the ARC on Netgalley. I can't say one thing that didn't hit the mark with me, but several little things. But I didn't hate it, far from it. I just didn't love it with my whole heart and soul like I wanted and hoped I would.

Description: Patron Saints: Collecting Stanley Spencer is a revealing new exhibition at the renowned Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham - Spencer's spiritual home and major source of inspiration. The exhibition draws together a spectacular collection of loans, including The Centurion's Servant (Tate); Love on the Moor (Fitzwilliam); John Donne Arriving in Heaven, (Fitzwilliam) and one work not seen in the public domain in over 50 years. The exhibition and catalogue examine the often complex relationships between Spencer and his patrons and what drove them to collect his work. Spencer was a single-minded genius, but the influence of his patrons on his painting is far greater than has hitherto been realised. At the turn of the century, collecting art was no longer the preserve of the aristocracy and the upper classes, but Spencer's art appealed to a broad spectrum of art lovers, fellow artists, businessmen and politicians. Many of his patrons lived in Cookham, where he lived and found artistic inspiration, and many of his paintings were influenced by his spiritual feelings for that place. His idiosyncratic and deeplypersonal approach gave him a wide and enduring appeal, and he was patronised by some of the most important cultural figures and taste-makers of that time. Curator Amanda Bradley comments, 'Behind Stanley Spencer, one of the greatest Modern British artists, were a group of individuals who enabled his very existence - both artistically and emotionally. They were not wildly rich, but they were powerful, cultivated, intellectual and artistic. Some bought on spec, others were true patrons, giving him the freedom to fulfil his artistic genius. Most fostered long-lived relationships with the artist, influencing his life and work more than has hitherto been realised. These were the patron saints." Patron Saints: Collecting Stanley Spencer explores the emergence of Spencer as an artistic personality, looking at those who helped him and why he - and his popularity - was a product of the zeitgeist (first half of the twentieth century) characterised by social and economic anxiety.

Description: In Catholicism, sainthood is the highest state of holiness for any soul in Heaven. There are more than 10,000 saints that have been canonized by the Catholic Church - some were exemplary models, others extraordinary teachers, while some worked miracles or changed the lives of millions through their guidance and good works. Arranged in chronological order, the book covers all the major saints, from St Paul, the Apostle who did most to spread Christianity following the death of Christ, and established Christian communities in Asia Minor - to Pope John Paul II, famous for being a peacemaker and providing spiritual inspiration during the fall of communism. In between, this compact volume covers well-known historical figures such as Joan of Arc, who defended the honour of France in the Medieval era, the philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas, and lesser-known saints such as Zita, the 13th century patron saint of maids and domestic servants. Beautifully produced in traditional Chinese binding and with 150 illustrations and artworks of saints from every part of the world, this book will fascinate anyone interested in inspiring - and often very human - religious figures from Biblical times to the present. Description: In early seventeenth-century Spain, the Castilian parliament voted to elevate the newly beatified Teresa of Avila to co-patron saint of Spain alongside the traditional patron, Santiago. Saint and Nation examines Spanish devotion to the cult of saints and the controversy over national patron sainthood to provide an original account of the diverse ways in which the early modern nation was expressed and experienced by monarch and town, center and periphery. By analyzing the dynamic interplay of local and extra-local, royal authority and nation, tradition and modernity, church and state, and masculine and feminine within the co-patronage debate, Erin Rowe reconstructs the sophisticated balance of plural identities that emerged in Castile during a central period of crisis and change in the Spanish world.

    Price: £12.99

Description: Weaving the myths of the Sirens into the landscape and history of the island of Capri, Siren Land focuses on the legends and archaeology, folklore and daily life, patron saints, local ghosts, wine and the wind of the region. Norman Douglas, one of the 20th century's great travellers in Italy, was for most of his life inextricably, passionately, connected to the Bay of Naples. This breath-taking sweep of sea and coastline - dominated by Vesuvius and with Pozzuoli and Sorrento standing sentinel - was Douglas' first experience of Italy. It was here, on the island of Capri, that he died, some 55 years after first buying a villa in Naples. Siren Land, Douglas' first travel book, is a homage to a part of the world that captivated him more than any other. Douglas writes with knowledge and an irrepressible exuberance of the past and the present, of legends and archaeology, folklore and daily life, patron saints, local ghosts, wine and the wind. As the summer draws to a close, Douglas' prose becomes suffused with a melancholy tinged with excitement at what still remains to be discovered: 'relics of Roman rule, of old Hellas, or medieval romance. These are the delights of Siren Land'.
