Description: Pink Floyd are one of the most innovative and enduringly successful bands in history. 1973's Dark Side of the Moon, though far from the first concept album, established a new model for quasi-symphonic, long-form investigations into the human condition. It is a record of thoughtfully poignant lyrics and some of the most powerful, genre-defining rock music ever made. Roger Waters, Rick Wright, Nick Mason and the tragically brilliant Syd Barrett fused English whimsy with electrifying voyages through inner and outer space. Their underground gigs are the stuff of psychedelic legend, but between 1968 and 1971, with Barrett replaced by David Gilmour, their sonic inquiries were never braver. Some were delivered instantly while others were revealed slowly, but all played crucial parts in rock's development. During the 1970s, the music matured as the messages darkened. While Floyd continued to prove that emotional weight can be forged from deceptively modest arrangements, the band's live spectaculars reached a pitch of technical complexity and extravagance none has matched. With insightful analysis and witty objectivity, Richard Butterworth appraises afresh Pink Floyd's official recorded canon, from 'Arnold Layne' to The Endless River and beyond to 2022 and the first all-new Floyd music for 28 years. Review: To answer the inaccurate comment by 'Jupiter Tonans': If Nick Mason stated, in his own memoir, that he did not play on this or that Pink Floyd song, it's probably safe to say that he was correct. It's difficult to apply Paul Kantner's old adage 'if you can remember the sixties, you weren't there' to a musician of the period who largely avoided mind-altering substances. Iggy Pop or Keith Richards (or, indeed, Syd Barrett) might have been excused the occasional momentary lapse of reason, but I'd say Nick's head was straight enough in the long term for his recall to be fairly precise. By Nick's lights and by many others, Norman Smith drummed on 'Remember A Day'. Not unnaturally, Floyd would have sought synergy with the rest of their work. Nick's patterns were not massively complex; as well as being a fine producer, Smith had enough understanding of the needs and nuances of session musicianship (and particularly those of drumming) to be able readily to adapt a percussive and rhythmic style to his clients' requirements. Perhaps 'Jupiter' would be kind enough to point out the other errors alleged in a book whose content I can assure him or her I researched exhaustively.

Review: Another error is the assertion that Mason didn't play the drums on Remember a Day. Of course he did despite his memoir, it's clearly his style. Norman Smith played the drums on See Saw.
