Review: I love thrillers with an emphasis on police procedures. I also love scientifically accurate stories with richly painted characters. So when a friend recommended Ms Cornwell's work I couldn't wait to dive in. Perhaps I chose the wrong book. Without any prior knowledge of the characters, I found the going extremely hard work, especially at the start. Ms Cornwell's attention to detail, whilst laudable when describing the post mortem procedures, didn't allow the plot to develop quickly enough for me. I found the opening few chapters, where the heroine is travelling through the snow to her lab almost interminable. I didn't know any of the characters at the start and whereas long-term fans of the Scarpetta series will no doubt welcome the heroine back into their lives, I found little to draw me to the characters. For me, the plot only started to motor when Ms Sarpetta finally extricated herself from the confines of her lab and arrived at her associate's murder scene. All-in-all, I didn't fall in love with Ms Scarpetta or any of the characters inhabiting Port Mortuary. I wanted to love this book, but I only liked (just). I am truly disappointed.
