Review: I picked this booklet up when it appeared in my borough library’s new arrivals to see what it had to say. My knowledge of the Suffragette movement comes from two main sources, which I last read/watched back in the 1970s - George Dangerfield’s “The Strange Death of Liberal England” on Britain in the years before the Great War, and the BBC’s “Shoulder to Shoulder”, a dramatised account of the Suffragette movement, with Sian Phillips as Mrs Pankhurst, and names such as Verity Lambert and Waris Hussein among the production staff. This book is basically a novelisation of the recent film of the same name -Suffragette [DVD] [2015 ] - a fictionalised account of one of the most famous episodes of the Suffragette campaign for votes and equal rights for women. It has a couple of pages of notes at the front to introduce the background and characters, and eight pages of classroom material at the back, with 50 pages devoted to the adaptation. If you know little about the period the story is set in, you will learn much about it, though it is written from a modern-day standpoint, and things which are important to us are given prominence, whereas reformers living back in the day had many other more important concerns, such as public health and related issues - something brought out in the Shoulder to Shoulder series. One final point, which I hope doesn’t count as a spoiler - modern historians are divided over whether Emily just intended to disrupt the event in the penultimate scene, and that the consequence was an accident, rather than being deliberate.
