Review: Another cracker from Nicholas Bowling - again with a very different feel from his other works. Funny, inventive as well as touching and poignant. Nicholas weaves traditional ideas of island life (Scottish I think from the use of words like 'haar') with fantasy to create a mysterious world filled with ghasts (friendly ancestors who are still very much part of island life), hilarious musician pirates and terrifying things that lurk under the sea. It is a story of friendship, family bonds and ultimately, a betrayal. There are lots of references to music but you don't need to play an instrument to understand it. Reminded me in places of 'His Dark Materials' but feels utterly original. The main pulls for me were the imagery and the humour - with several laugh out loud moments that never detracted from the story. Great for a kid to self read or be read to at bedtime - and adults would enjoy too (which is always the way with the best childrens' books!)
