Review: I read this in one sitting, coming up and out of another too long and seriously black depression, followed by 'Shoot the Damn Dog' (Sally Brampton. See separate review). I'd consider these two books together to be the survival guides for anyone who suffers from this sad, much misunderstood illness. Gwyneth Lewis details not just the machinations of her depressed mind (and spirit) but also describes the equally debilitating physical side of the illness which I think is often overlooked. It is an amazingly honest book and especially open and encouraging in regard to her relationship with her husband and her perception of his perspective (sorry if that sounds convoluted) through her deep depression. This helped this reviewer see her own depression from a new and tremendously enlightening angle inspite of years of reading both 'technical' books on depression and 'self help' type of books. Ms Lewis is an incredibly intelligent and well-educated and witty lady and to be alongside her on her journey through depression is a privilege, giving the reader a glimpse of hope and a chance to smile when both seem impossible.

Review: Have got about half way through, to the bit where she decides to relax and enjoy the depression. Have given up as finding it so hard to read and disjointed, and focused on poetry. So far have learned two things, mindfulness helps, and looking after yourself, but I thought that was common sense. I also felt the advice on not joining the gym as the people there might be thin and fit and therefore you will feel bad, to be very negative and might put people off something which might really help them. The gym has a range of people with all sorts of physical problems and mental, and it can be very helpful. It can make a real difference, so don't be put off, give it a go!

Description: 101 Ways to Climb out of the Slough of Despondency - a literary guide (part memoir, part companion) to coming through depression.' Depression is internal snow. Black snow. The flakes whirl around like motes in the water around your personal shipwreck. The quicker you dive down to see your sorry state, the better for you in life. For above you, if only you can reach it without getting the bends, are sunshine, laughter on a yacht, the clink of plates as a lunch of steaming fish is handed round.' Whilst the overall structure of 'Sunbathing in the Rain' moves from dark to light, telling the story of Lewis's recovery, its different strands allow a variety of tones and subjects to be explored, from the profound to the frivolous. Alongside a paragraph about the proper relationship between the ego, the mind and the emotions nestles a passage on the therapeutic value of nail varnish. Practical hints on how to get better (diet, read Hello!, helpful pieces of music) are alongside striking quotations, ranging from sentences on crisp packets, to prayers, from Russian orthodox writings on silence to collections of slang. Part memoir - drawing on her own experiences, both adverse and encouraging, as a depressive and an alcoholic - and part guide or companion, this book brings Burton's 'Anatomy of Melancholy' into the twenty-first century. For it will have two voices, one calling from the valley of despair, the other from a safer, calmer new place. The suffering depressive needs help from outside his or her own consciousness, a radical new perspective that makes life possible again. This unique book offers it.

Description: Bleeters come and bleeters go, they never, never stay - if it's not raining now more rain is on the way. It's widely reported that Eskimos have over 50 words for snow. Given the equivalent ubiquity of rain in Britain's northern climes, it is not surprising that Scots have coined just as many (and possibly many more) expressions for the many different types of precipitation that fall from our skies. In this book Ron Butlin introduces 50 of the most colourful Scottish words for rain in humorous and memorable verse, imaginatively accompanied with illustrations by Tim Kirby.
