Review: I never give 5 stars, but this series is just too epic! I remember buying the first book out of curiosity in primary school during a book sale and I fell in love with it despite not being that well versed or interested in books like this. Unfortunately, I lent it to someone and they never gave it back. I couldn't find it in libraries and the thought never occured to me to buy it, but here I am finally buying book number 2 after years. This is by far my favourite series! I ordered this book as 'new' and came in great quality. I've ordered the first book as 'used' and it'll arrive in a few days, so I'll leave a review for that one when it arrives. From the writing style to the characters and the plot, this series is by far legendary!

Review: I bought this book for our 11 year old son since he absolutely loved The Apothecary. This book is rated for children 10 years and up. This is a passage from the book that disturbed me as well as our son: Page 110: Benjamin rolled over on the mat. His head was clearing now. I'm so proud of you, Janie had said to the grinning boy. And she had hugged him. There'd been something strange and unexpected in the hug, but Benjamin wasn't sure what it was. Then he realized with a shock: Janie had real breasts now, and they must have pressed against the boy as she threw her arms round him. That Benjamin had been forced to experience the hug in his own body seemed particularly unfair and revolting. He pulled a mosquito net over his head and tried counting to a hundred - then a thousand- to get to sleep." I do not see what this adds to the story. In a culture where everything is sexual, from billboards to sitcoms, to scantily dressed teenagers, I am terribly disappointed in the author's choice to "spice" up her story with something "sexual" for her young readers, especially boys. Thankfully our son hasn't reached adolescence in which case this passage would tantalize his mind onto a path of thinking that could only hurt him. Shame on Maile Meloy. I will not be buying her books in the future.

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Replacements' Let It Be

    Price: £9.99

    Brand: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC

Description: One of the defining moments of College Rock in the USA, Let It Be (and the Replacments themselves) had an enormous impact on the lives of the fans who fell under its spell. For Colin Meloy, a daydreaming adolescent in the cultural wilderness of Montana, the album was a lifeline and an inspiration. In this disarming memoir, Meloy lovingly recreates those initial years when music grips you, and never lets go. 33 1/3 is a series of short books about critically acclaimed and much-loved albums of the last 40 years. Focusing on one album rather than an artist's entire output, the books dispense with the standard biographical background that fans know already, and cut to the heart of the music on each album. The authors provide fresh, original perspectives, often through their access to and relationships with the key figures involved in the recording of these albums. By turns obsessive, passionate, creative, and informed, the books in this series demonstrate many different ways of writing about music. (A task that can be, as Elvis Costello famously observed, as tricky as dancing about architecture.) What binds this series together, and what brings it to life, is that all of the authors - musicians, scholars, and writers - are deeply in love with the album they have chosen. Previous titles in this now well-established series have beaten sales expectations and received excellent review coverage - the third batch is sure to continue this success. More titles follow in the spring of 2005. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Replacements' Let It Be - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
