Review: As always Kathy Reichs delivers on the bones and their interpretation. Picking up a case from a previous novel this is neatly interwoven tom the current case at hand. The perils of DNA sequencing ar clear highlighted. As always suspenseful to the last pages. A page turner

Review: I read this with a gifted copy courtesy of publishers Simon & Schuster via The Usual Suspects Instagram account. This is an honest and voluntary review. I haven’t read a Kathy Reichs book in a long time. I remember trying one of the early ones in the Temperance Brennan series when they first came out. At that time I was a huge Patricia Cornwell fan. I found Reichs’s style too dry for me, I couldn't engage with the characters. I’ve now watched all of the Bones TV series, very loosely based on the Brennan books, so when I was gifted The Bone Code it seemed a great time to give the books another try. Unfortunately, I’m still finding it quite dry. Brennan has a network of friends who bring a but more light to the story, but it still feels very exposition heavy. The narrative is in first person and written like a journal or report, but the phrase ‘a word about’ before describing current relationships or job circumstances is used too often. It feels too slanted towards the incoming reader rather than the faithful one who has read every previous book in the series. Jeffrey Deaver’s latest Lincoln Rhyme book The Midnight Lock shows that it is possible to so this much more subtly. I also returned to that series recently without having read an instalment for a number of hears, but the backstory feels much more welcoming and subtle, and far less disruptive for a regular reader. A readable mystery, but not enough tension and too many lengthy explanations to offer a gripping thriller.
