Author: The Good & The Bad

Rating: 5

Review: The plot line in one line: The future King of Scotland wants mighty “I don’t do emotions” Scottish warrior Tor MacLeod to train an elite band of muscly men who will help him win his war, and beguiling romanticist Christina is offered as part of the deal, but after Tor reluctantly marries Christina he finds his biggest battle is the fight not to fall in love. The good and the bad: Well, what is more swoon-worthy than a tall, muscly guy who frightens the heck out of everyone else but is tender to his woman? Ladies and gents, Tor and his elite squad of highland warriors are serious muscle porn and unadulterated eye candy. Monica McCarty does a fantastic job of describing Tor, the leader of the group. He’s physically huge (everywhere – wink, wink), serious to his core and seemingly immovable. So it’s sheer pleasure to see how naïve and innocent virgin Christina, who doesn’t realise how alluring she is, gradually manages to weave her way into his heart and tap into his deeply-buried emotional side. It’s not an easy feat for the lass and there are times when I felt really sorry for her as she unwittingly interfered with Tor’s plans to keep his clan safe, subsequently cheesing him off (and a cheesed off warrior is scary). But all this adds to the sexual tension between them – and there is tons of that from the first moment they meet, including an early scene when Christina finds herself in trouble outside in the dark… Hubba hubba. The sex scenes are someone-crack-open-the-window-and-let’s-get-some-air-in-here hot – sometimes tender, sometimes raw but always steamy and graphic. Whew! I also enjoyed the wider plot about a group of elite warriors training to help Robert Bruce battle King Edward, as he attempts to be crowned King of Scotland. I’m not very knowledgeable about Scottish or medieval history but nothing about this story struck me as factually incorrect – it all felt well-researched. The book even piqued my interest about Scottish history and I found myself Googling Robert the Bruce afterwards and reading the author’s notes at the end, which I never do. We also get enough of an insight into some of the other warriors in this series to get a sense of their individual characters and skills, and I became desperate to read their stories. In fact, I purchased and read the next book in this series (Hawk) straight after I finished reading this one! (And I'm now on the third book in the series.) I am so happy to have discovered Monica McCarty and delighted that I have her entire back catalogue to enjoy!

Review: This is Book 1 in the Highland Guards series with Tor 'Chief' MacLeod and Christina Fraser. Christina and Beatrix Fraser, the daughters of Andrew Fraser, wish to flee his cruelty and live in a nunnery. Beatrix, a weak, yet 'angelic' looking young woman, is the favourite of her father's to make her marry Tor MacLeod, aka The Chief, a huge, rugged Highlander, but it's Christina who steps up to protect her sister. Christina can secretly read and write, and enjoys the stories of Lancelot and Guinevere. In her romantic mind, she hopes Tor could be like Lancelot, but this intimidating man doesn't want to re-marry, since his wife is already dead and his two elder sons living elsewhere. He is content to enjoy the attentions of his leman, Lady Janet, but most of the time, he is training his men in secrecy. But when Andrew forces Tor's hand, Christina is happy to be married, but is saddened to learn her new husband only wishes for her to breed him children and run the castle. She wonders where her husband is, since he is only around to bed her at night. In the meantime, she makes friends with Brother John, who tells her about Lady Janet. Christina is hurt when she witnesses their intimate conversations; why can't he be like that with her? She pulls out all the stops to make him love her, but even as Tor begins to open up, he isn't happy with her prodding, and quickly throws himself back into the training. It is only when Christina leaves him and her life is in danger that Tor learns he can't live without her, and is determined to win her back. Overall, the book was pretty good. There were a few moments where we had a few 'American-isms,' and there was a slight inaccuracy with regard to the location of Ardrossan Castle being in Ayr, (it's actually Ayrshire). It was quite a long book, but a couple of things were missed out which made me wonder. SPOILERS 1) Tor's sons. He mentions them to Christina and she wants to meet them, but they never do and it made me wonder why they were mentioned to begin with. They aren't brought up again. Perhaps they are in another book? 2) Lady Janet. I thought she would have had a bigger role, since she was Tor's leman. Just as you think you might hear more, she suddenly disappears from the book. It hasn't stopped me wanting to read the others, since they are relatively minor questions. I have already ordered book 2 with 'The Hawk,' and will read it when it arrives today. 3/5

Description: A brilliant biography - John Sutherland has brought Monica Jones to life as she deserves.' Claire Tomalin' Eye-opening. in this account [ Monica Jones] comes alive.' The Sunday Times Monica Jones was Philip Larkin's partner for more than four decades, and was arguably the most important woman in his life. She was cruelly immortalised as Margaret Peel in Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim and widely vilified for destroying Larkin's diaries and works in progress after his death. She was opinionated and outspoken, widely disliked by his friends and Philip himself was routinely unfaithful to her. But Monica Jones was also a brilliant academic and an inspiring teacher in her own right. She wrote more than 2,000 letters to Larkin, and he in turn poured out his heart to her. In this revealing biography John Sutherland explores the question: who was the real Monica? The calm and collected friend and teacher? The witty conversationalist and inspirational lecturer? Or the private Monica, writing desperate, sometimes furious, occasionally libellous, drunken letters to the only man, to the absent man, whom she could love? Was Monica's life - one of total sacrifice to a great poet - worthwhile? Through his careful reading of Monica's never-before-seen letters, and his own recollections, John Sutherland shows us a new side to Larkin's story, and allows Monica to finally step out from behind the poet's shadow. This remarkable unpublished correspondence only came to light after Monica Jones's death in 2001, and consists of nearly two thousand letters, postcards and telegrams, which chronicle - day by day, sometimes hour by hour - every aspect of Larkin's life and the convolutions of their relationship.
