Review: Really enjoyable book exploring Jews in czechoslovakia during World War 2. Also if interested in history some interesting facts. I really enjoyed this book.

Review: This was an interesting idea for a story, but the end result felt a little flat & stilted. Characters’ thoughts were frequently repetitive & there were too many coincidences. Character development was a little lacking, such that it was hard to feel as moved as the subject matter warranted. I nearly stopped reading after the first sentence of Chapter 1: I find it hard to believe that the grating Americanism ‘hollering’ was a suitable choice of word to use about someone shouting up the stairs in 1933 Hampstead. It stuck out like a sore thumb.

Description: Read her letter. Remember her story. Gripping. Mesmerising. Haunting. Heart-breaking. Once you've heard her story, you will never forget The Girl in the Letter. Perfect for fans of Kate Morton, Rachel Hore and Kathryn Hughes, this page-turning, moving novel of separation and long-buried secrets will stay with you for ever. In the winter of 1956 pregnant young Ivy is sent in disgrace to St Margaret's, a home for unmarried mothers in the south of England, run by nuns, to have her child. Her baby daughter is adopted. Ivy will never leave. Sixty years later, journalist Samantha stumbles upon a series of letters from Ivy to her lover, pleading with him to rescue her from St Margaret's before it is too late. As Sam pieces together Ivy's tragic story, terrible secrets about St Margaret's dark past begin to emerge. What happened to Ivy, to her baby, and to the hundreds of children born in the home? What links a number of mysterious, sudden deaths in the area? And why are those who once worked at St Margaret's so keen that the truth should never be told? As Sam unpicks the sinister web of lies surrounding St Margaret's, she also looks deep within - to confront some unwelcome truths of her own. • Waterstones Understanding the Holocaust at KS3: How and why did it happen

    Price: £9.50

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In 2016 the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education published a landmark study, What do students know and understand about the Holocaust? Almost 10,000 students aged 11 to 18 participated in the research. It was the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. The study indicated that the vast majority of young people found the subject interesting and relevant. However, it also revealed that many students did not have clear knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust. Written in direct response to the findings of the 2016 national study, this textbook significantly improves understanding of the Holocaust by: Providing you with an appropriate historical overview of key aspects of the Holocaust Helping you to understand the long-standing hatred of Jews (i. e., the roots of antisemitism) Deepening your knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust Encouraging you to challenge common myths and misconceptions (e. g., that Hitler was solely responsible for the Holocaust) Developing your understanding of key historical concepts (e. g., evidence, interpretation, causation, significance) Enabling you to answer the big historical question: How and why did the Holocaust happen? Helping you to appreciate the impact of the Holocaust on ordinary people across Europe Inviting you to consider the importance of the Holocaust and its significance today This textbook is supported by additional materials and teacher guidance notes on the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education website (holocausteducation. Org. uk). The original design, development and distribution of this textbook was funded by the Toni Schiff Memorial Fund and the Pears Foundation. The Centre is enormously grateful for their support. The Wiener Holocaust Library also provided considerable assistance in developing the textbook. Price: £35.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This book offers a survey of the encounter between the Third Reich and European Jewry. Pointing out the difficulties historians face in interpreting the ever-expanding documentary record, it includes treatment of the role of non-Germans in the Holocaust, consideration of the much-debated nexus between the Holocaust and modernity, and discussion on how 'the Holocaust' developed as a distinct historical topic. Fully updated, this new third edition incorporates the latest scholarly findings with expanded treatment of gendered aspects of the Holocaust, the Holocaust's world historical contexts, the long-term history of Jewish-Christian relations, and thinking about the Holocaust's contemporary relevance, as well as additional documents reflecting recent archival discoveries. Offering a concise narration that appeals to both the intellect and the emotions, the book enables students to gain a real understanding of the events of this catastrophic time. Including a useful selection of original documents (many never before anthologised in English), a chronology, glossary, and 'who's who', David Engel's book will be welcomed by anyone trying to get to grips with this complex and far-reaching subject.
