Review: One of the things I like about Dürer is that he was absolutely obsessed with detail which is why I bought this book as a costume, arms and armour reference for the period 1490-1528. Woodcuts don't show as much detail as paintings and engravings who show things like seam lines allowing one to extrapolate sewing patterns but they are still interesting . Apart from that anything about Dürer is simply always a must read if you are interested in N-European Renaissance art of this period. Good book.

Review: I've been studying the northern Renaissance for some years, and enjoyed immensely the various woodcuts created by Dürer in many art textbooks. I thought it was high time I bought a book entirely of these incredible works, especially as I wanted the entire Apocalypse series. I read the reviews here, and took the plunge. There is no criticism of the size of the book (it's large), nor the omission of any text. I quite like that. What I don't like is the reproduction itself. Others here have remarked on the quality of the paper and print. Imagine a child's colouring book and you're almost there. The paper is a cream/yellow and what's worse is the ink is light grey. I'm used to seeing these on white paper with black ink. That is how they should be printed. Art historian Jeffrey Chipps Smith says, when comparing Dürer's work to that of his tutor, Michael Wolgemut: "Dürer's darks are far richer than Wolgemut's [with] remarkable gradations from deep blacks to intense whites". The washed out look of all the prints make it very difficult to see exactly what is going on, and actually the drama of the images is certainly reigned in. The photograph I have included shows a woodcut image on an iPad screen, next to the same image in this book. I'll let you be the judge. It wouldn't matter half as much if this weren't the only book I can currently find containing all his woodcuts. A massive missed opportunity, and a lot of cash to part with!

Description: The painter and printmaker Albrecht Duerer is one of the most important figures of the German Renaissance. This book accompanies the first major exhibition of the Whitworth art gallery's outstanding Duerer collection in over half a century. It offers a new perspective on Duerer as an intense observer of the worlds of manufacture, design and trade that fill his graphic art. Artworks and artefacts examined here expose understudied aspects of Duerer's art and practice, including his attentive examination of objects of daily domestic use, his involvement in economies of local manufacture and exchange, the microarchitectures of local craft and, finally, his attention to cultures of natural and philosophical inquiry and learning. Price: £39.99

Description: Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528) enjoyed European-wide fame during his lifetime. Duerer was not only a brilliant painter, but also a pioneering printmaker, experimental draughtsman, book publisher, first German art theoretician and amateur poet. His art was avidly collected, repeatedly copied in diverse media, and often forged. Then, with his death, the posthumous Duerers were born. This book addresses his afterlife or, more correctly, afterlives. Beginning with the heartfelt eulogies of his friends and the creation of contemporary portraits of the Nuremberg master, Duerer's person, his likenesses, and his art have been celebrated for over five hundred years. Our contemporary Duerer is the subject of intense scholarly discussions on the one hand and of social and commercial popularization on the other hand. Description: Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528) was hailed in his lifetime as a founder of the Northern Renaissance, and his work revolutionized the art of printmaking. Duerer was also the first artist outside Italy to leave behind a large body of writing. Contemporaries and succeeding generations added their accounts of him to this documentary legacy. Jeffrey Ashcroft's new book provides the first English translation of the whole corpus of Duerer's writings; the legal, financial, and administrative documentation of his life and work; and what others wrote about him during his life and in the following century. Translations of primary documents are accompanied by extensive commentary, providing Anglophone scholars access to German-language research. This unique combination of documentary evidence, current research, and exhaustive bibliography will doubtless become a definitive source for students and scholars of Duerer and his work, as well as for historians of early modern culture, language, and literature. • Waterstones Dürer's Lost Masterpiece

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Duerer's Lost Masterpiece tracks the history of a turning point in the career of the celebrated German artist Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528), when he stopped painting altarpieces after arguing with a merchant patron over payment. As an eloquent homage to Duerer's life, it brings us closer to the creation and meaning of his paintings than ever before. Duerer's Lost Masterpiece considers the celebrated German artist Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528), his time and his legacy. It tracks the history of a crucial, and often overlooked, turning point in his career, when Duerer stopped painting altarpieces after falling out with the Frankfurt merchant Jacob Heller over a commission. The story of this painting, as Duerer's lost masterpiece, functions as a lens through which to view the new relationship developing between art, collecting and commerce in Europe up to the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) when global trade and cultural exchanges were increasing. At the heart of the book is the argument that merchants, and their mentalities, were crucial for the making of Renaissance art and its legacy for modern art. The book draws on a decade of research, and uniquely draws the reader into the rich emotional worlds of three merchants each of whom typified the evolving relationship between art and commerce in that entrepreneurial, and often ruthless, age. It brings to life Duerer's determined fight for creative makers to be adequately paid and explores the big questions about how European societies came to value the arts and crafts that remain relevant to our time. Description: A polymath of the German Renaissance, Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528) was a prolific artist, theorist, and writer whose works explored everything from religion to art theory to philosophy. His vast body of work includes altarpieces, portraits, self-portraits, watercolors, and books, but is most celebrated for its astonishing collection of woodcut prints, which transformed printmaking from an artisan practice into a whole new art form. Duerer's woodcuts astonish in scale as much as detail. Through works such as Apocalypse and the Triumphal Arch for Emperor Maximilian I, he created dense, meticulous compositions that were much larger, much more finely cut, and far more complex than any earlier woodcut efforts. With an ambitious tonal and dynamic range, he introduced a new level of conceptual, emotional, and spiritual intensity. His two major woodcut series on Christ's Passion, named The Large Passion and The Small Passion after their size, are particularly remarkable for their vivid human treatment of the Christian narrative. In his copper engraving, Melancholia I, meanwhile, Duerer created a startling vision of emotional ennui, often cited as a defining early image of a depressive or melancholic state. Ever inquisitive, Duerer absorbed ideas not only from masters and fellow artists in Germany but also from Italy, while his own influence extended across Europe for generations to come. In this essential TASCHEN introduction, we explore this pioneering figure's complex practice, his omnivorous intellect, and the key works which shaped his enduring legacy. Description: An exploration of Duerer's career and legacy as an international traveling artist The visual legacy of Duerer's travels extends far beyond his lifetime and throughout Europe, and the documents illuminating them offer unique insights into the distinctive ways Duerer conducted and managed his career, making him an intriguing | ??and even controversial | ??figure. This generously illustrated book examines the career of preeminent Renaissance artist Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528) as an international traveler, addressing his relations with artists from Italy to the Low Countries, including Giovanni Bellini, Joos van Cleve, Jan Gossaert, Lucas van Leyden, Quentin Massys, and Bernard van Orley. Bringing together paintings, drawings and prints, the book examines Duerer as an artist-entrepreneur, explorer, and innovator of artistic theory. Duerer's treatises and letters, and his detailed journal documenting his journey to the Low Countries in 1520-21, offer insights into his artistic practices and encounters with artists and patrons, as well as the nature of travel in the early 16th century. Description: The Hamburg banker's son Aby Warburg (1866-1929) was one of the most influential art historians and cultural theorists of the 20th century. His life's work was devoted to tracing antique formulas of representation in the depiction of human passions in Renaissance art. For this epoch-spanning relationship, he developed the term 'pathos formula' (Pathosformel). In a lecture given in 1905 in the Konzerthaus in Hamburg, focusing on the young Albrecht Duerer's Death of Orpheus, Warburg outlined his thoughts in front of the original drawing, which he had borrowed from the rich holdings of the Kunsthalle in order to better illustrate his idea. This drawing, pivotal in the young artist's development as an ambitious response to classical antiquity, was displayed during the lecture alongside a group of engravings and woodcuts which included not only some of Duerer's own seminal later prints, such as Melencolia I, but also engravings by Andrea Mantegna which Duerer copied in 1494, the same year he drew the Death of Orpheus. Warburg's 'pop-up exhibition' of eleven works has here been reconstructed and analyzed, using his fascinating lecture notes, sketches and slide lists. First developed by the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 2011, subsequently on view in Cologne in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and now at The Courtauld Gallery, each institution has interpreted the material slightly differently, while retaining the core Warburg group. Aby Warburg aimed at unlocking the meaning of an art work by excavating its roots in its cultural context. By restaging his legendary display of 1905 with Duerer's Death of Orpheus at its heart, the exhibition and accompanying book present some of the most skillful and ambitious works on paper ever produced and also seek to introduce into Warburg's rich intellectual universe to a broader public, hoping thereby to offer both sheer enjoyment and food for thought. • Waterstones Durer's Fight Book

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Albrecht Durer is probably the most famous German artist of the Renaissance, if not of all time. His works are world-famous and he was a master in numerous artistic disciplines such as woodcut, copperplate engraving, drawing and painting. What is less well known is that he was interested in weapons and fencing throughout his life. He produced several woodcuts for a tournament book by Emperor Maximilian I, but he devoted himself much more thoroughly to the subject of duels in his own extensive fencing manuscript. Durer's fight book stands out from the mass of illustrated fencing manuscripts because of its outstanding quality. In well over 100 elaborate drawings, the master uniquely depicts dynamic pairs of fighters practising contemporary combat techniques, such as wrestling or sword and dagger fighting. Since its creation more than 500 years ago, the fight book has never been published in its entirety. This edition offers the complete contents of the manuscript for the very first time: All illustrations are reproduced in colour and the complete text is presented in a letter-perfect transcription as well as a translation into modern English. Albrecht Durer's fight book offers a unique, new look at Durer the artist and Durer the fighter. Waterstones Durer's Fight Book - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
