Review: I know a number of people who really ought to have appeared in this book - my husband, for one, my brother in law for another - but somehow escaped doing so. I'm sure many of the people who do appear never thought they would. Them's the breaks. Anyway, I find you can lie in the bath reading it, chuckling to yourself and feeling slightly smug that - yes - you might be every bit as stupid as some of these people BUT SOMEHOW YOU DODGED THE BULLET! YOU'RE STILL ALIVE! AND YOU'VE HAD KIDS! YES! Have another wine, you've earned it!

Review: This is the original book in what appears to be a 'series'. As it was the first it is no longer in print and I chose this because the first would have the whole past to draw upon for stories, whereas subsequent books could only draw upon a much shorter period of time i.e. since the last book. As it was many of the 'adventures' / events were of mediocre interest and given the stories of Darwin Awards I have read about in news paper articles which made me gasp in horror. The contents of this book in the main made me smile a little and yawn an equal amount. So overall I was disappointed.

Description: The legend of Charles Darwin has never been more alive or more potent, but by virtue of this, his legacy has become susceptible to myths and misunderstandings. Understanding Charles Darwin examines key questions such as what did Darwin's work change about the world? In what ways is 'Darwinism' reflective of Darwin's own views? What problems were left unsolved? In our elevation of Darwin to this iconic status, have we neglected to recognise the work of other scientists? The book also examines Darwin's struggle with his religious beliefs, considering his findings, and whether he was truly an atheist. In this engaging account, Peterson paints an intimate portrait of Darwin from his own words in private correspondence and journals. The result is the Darwin you never knew.

  • Waterstones Darwin's Argument by Analogy

    Price: £24.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In On the Origin of Species (1859), Charles Darwin put forward his theory of natural selection. Conventionally, Darwin's argument for this theory has been understood as based on an analogy with artificial selection. But there has been no consensus on how, exactly, this analogical argument is supposed to work - and some suspicion too that analogical arguments on the whole are embarrassingly weak. Drawing on new insights into the history of analogical argumentation from the ancient Greeks onward, as well as on in-depth studies of Darwin's public and private writings, this book offers an original perspective on Darwin's argument, restoring to view the intellectual traditions which Darwin took for granted in arguing as he did. From this perspective come new appreciations not only of Darwin's argument but of the metaphors based on it, the range of wider traditions the argument touched upon, and its legacies for science after the Origin. • Waterstones The Cambridge Companion to Darwin

    Price: £31.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The naturalist and geologist Charles Darwin (1809-82) ranks as one of the most influential scientific thinkers of all time. In the nineteenth century his ideas about the history and diversity of life - including the evolutionary origin of humankind - contributed to major changes in the sciences, philosophy, social thought and religious belief. The Cambridge Companion to Darwin has established itself as an indispensable resource for anyone teaching or researching Darwin's theories and their historical and philosophical interpretations. Its distinguished team of contributors examines Darwin's main scientific ideas and their development; Darwin's science in the context of its times; the influence of Darwinian thought in recent philosophical, social and religious debate; and the importance of Darwinian thought for the future of naturalist philosophy. For this second edition, coverage has been expanded to include two new chapters: on Darwin, Hume and human nature, and on Darwin's theories in the intellectual long run, from the pre-Socratics to the present.

  • Waterstones Darwin's Most Wonderful Plants

    Price: £8.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Most of us think of Darwin at work on The Beagle, taking inspiration for his theory of evolution from his travels in the Galapagos. But Darwin published his Origin of Species nearly thirty years after his voyages and most of his labours in that time were focused on experimenting with and observing plants at his house in Kent. He was particularly interested in carnivorous and climbing plants, and in pollination and the evolution of flowers. Ken Thompson sees Darwin as a brilliant and revolutionary botanist, whose observations and theories were far ahead of his time - and are often only now being confirmed and extended by high-tech modern research. Like Darwin, he is fascinated and amazed by the powers of plants - particularly their Triffid-like aspects of movement, hunting and 'plant intelligence'. This is a much needed book that re-establishes Darwin as a pioneering botanist, whose close observations of plants were crucial to his theories of evolution.
