Review: This is the story of Aldwyn, an ordinary orphaned alley cat, who is mistaken for a wizard's magical companion. When the child wizards they accompany are kidnapped, Aldwyn and his new friends Gilbert (a frog) and Skylar (a bird), must set out to save them. For the most part, I found it fun, light reading that told a charming magic-filled animal adventure story. I did have a couple of issues with the story as a whole. As an adult reader, I found some of the dialogue, particularly with the humans, to be a bit forced--even a bit out of place for a magical YA fantasy. When one character said: “Talk about déjà vu," during a battle, I nearly spit soda out all over my Kindle while laughing because the phrase doesn't quite the magical fantasy genre... LOL My other chief issue is Skylar's attitude towards other (particularly Gilbert). I know she's supposed to be "Lil' Miss Know-It-All," but I really didn't like how she put Gilbert down all the time. I can handle the know-it-all angle, but I didn't like that she wasn't very nice (she's really quite a bully). Yes, bullies exist in real life, but Aldwyn, Gilbert, and Skylar are supposed to be friends. With Skylar being such a bully, though, I don't think it sets a very good example of friendship for young readers to have one putting others, especially friends, down all the time. There's enough bullying in "real life," so this aspect of running others down just kind of bothered me. There was still quite a lot I liked about the story, despite snobbish Skylar. I thought it was pretty well-paced for most of the book. Of course, the pacing of the plot is helped along by the fact that the Familiars only have three days to reach--and save--their Loyals. The descriptions of the magic wielded by the band of Familars are delightfully charming. I liked that The Familiars relied on Aldwyn's ability to think-on-his-feet under pressure ("training" from his upbringing as an orphan alley cat) to outwit the bigger opponents and escape sticky situations. While reading, I kept thinking that it didn't matter if he had "real magic" because ultimately his savvy as mundane feline was what was going to give him the strength to get to Jack's side, not necessarily magic (and certainly not magic alone). I really like that for most of the book, Aldwyn's street-smarts, loyalty, and personality shine through, regardless of any "magical" ability (or lack thereof) and save the "day" again and again, rather than totally relying on magic. There weren't a lot of "big" or obscure words in this story. Combined with the pacing, and the fun animal-driven story, this fact may make this book a good candidate for "reluctant readers." Overall, I found it mostly entertaining. I'd recommend it to people that like young adult magical fantasies and animal stories. I may read the second book in the series once i get some more of my Kindle purchases slush-pile conquered.

  • Waterstones The The Beatles in Posters

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Artist Tony Both worked in Liverpool during the early 1960s, just around the corner from The Cavern Club and close to the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein's office in Whitechapel. Tony's work caught Epstein's eye, and he would go on to produce posters, printed leaflets and a wide variety of publicity and display materials for Epstein's artists, most notably for a young four-piece beat combo called the Beatles. Alongside his work for Epstein, Tony produced hand-painted gig posters for many promoters, including Sam Leach, Allan Williams and The Cavern Club's DJ Bob Wooler, who also promoted many of the big events. Tony's original posters now fetch a considerable sum of money, and The Beatles in Posters features these as well as exact replicas of those that have been lost to time. This is the first book of its type and is a must-buy for all fans of the Fab Four and the Merseybeat scene. Waterstones The The Beatles in Posters - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
