Review: Good coverage of the Iraq war and a refreshing perspective of some of the everyday Iraqi's who the war has most affected. Although there is a lot of interaction and attachment to US platoons, its fascinating getting a view from his local team, driver, interpreter, etc and understanding their views on the American occupation, detailing how opinion began to change and the rapid destabilisation that followed. Excellent background on Afghanistans recent conflicts and history as well.

Review: This is a collection of articles from New York Times correspondent Dexter Filkins that span the period which sees the emergence and the rise of the Taliban, starting from a beheading he witnesses in Kabul, through to the American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq via a scene or two depicting his own experience of the 9/11 attacks. Filkins's narrative tries to capture all the foreignness and the "other" of these faraway lands under the crescent moon by sketching barren and moonlike landscapes populated by a wide cast of characters from the bewildered to the grotesque. He hangs with American soldiers, trying to piece together what makes them tick. They come across as genial types who just wanna be back home with the girls. He visits some of them back in America, he conveys their stories in three dimensional solidity; one gets a sense of who they are as humans. The locals on the other hand whether they be Afghani or Iraqi are in one of two broad camps: with us or against us. If you're with us then you're the plucky native who wants to come out of the darkness into shining enlightening democratic light to build a bright grand future full of schools, hospitals and free thought. Where children run in golden sun-kissed fields instead of minefields. These folk are just plain hampered by that pesky `against us' camp. The camp that is peopled by cut-throat pantomime villains. The camp that can't be trusted. An opportunistic bunch always on the lookout to stick and then slowly twist the knife. The camp who we'll never know as people with dreams and aspirations. Whose stories Filkins doesn't follow from the cradle to the grave. If Filkins paints portraits of the US soldiers and the for camp then he scrawls stick men of the `against us' camp. Scattered amongst these stories are personal vignettes such as his running routines. Some of which are poignantly told and are genuinely moving. Although at times one does wonder how these fit into the wider mosaic or even about the relevance but these are minor issues. And can be overlooked due to the quality (and at times the intensity) of the prose. Filkins attempts to show an emotional experience of modern warfare and of the people involved whether they be heroes, villains, accomplices or innocent bystanders. He wants this to transcend the 9/11 wars, to be about War itself. The problem is that the current wars (never mind War) didn't start with the emergence of the Taliban. History didn't begin on 9/11. However, despite his best attempts, the Americans come away looking either valiant, frustrated or bored but always sincere in what they are trying to do for the locals which is the "best" for them. The locals more often than not come away looking venal, money driven, and above all two-faced in their dealings with the nice Americans who just want to bring electricity, dams and civilisation to the children of Mesopotamia.
