Review: This is a great new series for young girls who want a bit more adventure and fantasy in their reading collections. Sophie is about to turn ten, and with that, comes a new responsibility which will see our protagonist fighting off `shadow creatures' in order to save the world from the Shadow Realm. This book is the first in a series of seven, and each sees Sophie battling a different type of creature, starting with the goblins, of which there are many types: Marsh, Tree, Snake, Frost, as well as other creatures such as boggles, sprites and imps, to name a few. Sophie provides a great role model for girls who want a bit more than the usual girl-type fare. She loves her skateboard and practises tae kwondo. Her twin brother is a bit of a nightmare and has stereotypical views of girls in that they like to dress up, play with dolls and make fairy cakes. Crucially, though, the authors don't make Sophie a heroine to the detriment of boys so that girls are good, boys are wimps. Sophie's best friend is a boy called Sam and it's reassuring to see that boys and girls can exist on a level playing field. The story is pacy and humorous and should provide an entertaining and imaginative read for young readers.
