Review: I expect that I am not the only person who finds reading the Father Brown stories a bit like reading the Sherlock Holmes stories, in that I have read them so many times I know what the story is just by the title. You may think that this leads to boredom but it is always nice to come back to these, preferably relaxed in my armchair with a cup of tea. In all this volume contains twelve tales, these being The Blue Cross, The Secret Garden, The Queer Feet, The Flying Stars, The Invisible Man, The Honour of Israel Gow, The Wrong Shape, The Sins of Prince Saradine, The Hammer of God, The Eye of Apollo, The Sign of the Broken Sword and, The Three Tools of Death. If it has been some time since you last read any Father Brown tales you may have forgotten how good they are and for those new to them this book will be a treat to read that will probably lead you on to reading all the stories. All Father Brown tales are short stories and are good little puzzles for you to get your head around, which is one of the reasons I suppose that they have always remained so popular, that and the fact that the amateur detective is just an unassuming Catholic priest. Well written and enjoyable to read, whether Father Brown is solving a murder, a theft, or other types of mysteries these are all well worth reading. I feel I should point out that although there is no table of contents listed in the 'Go To' menu there is in reality one. If you click back from the beginning of this you will find it, so it is quick and easy to find any particular story that you may want to read.

Review: One reviewer said "dull and uninspiring" - I think they over-rate it. The writer seems to me to be dispassionate to the point of coldness, sometimes gratuitously grisly and often tedious. I did not get any sense of what kind of person Father Brown is - dithery but brilliant, I get (forerunner of Columbo?) but other than that? I cannot envisage him as a priest, let alone one who works especially with the poor (as the book says.) He spends all his time with leisured people and joining a secret society which meets in an exclusive hotel (how can he afford that?) I think perhaps this is a book from an age when patriarchy was acceptable, feeling superior to everyone else was in vogue and stiff upper lip was highly valued. Somehow seems more out of line with the modern world than Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens and Doyle.

Description: The fourth collection of Father Brown stories featuring the ingenious amateur detective. Ahead of a new series of the popular BBC adaptation starring Mark Williams, all five of Chesterton's original Father Brown books have been republished with charming and collectible Penguin covers.' You see, I had murdered them all myself. I had thought out exactly how a thing like that could be done, and in what style or state of mind a man could really do it. And when I was quite sure that I felt exactly like the murderer myself, of course I knew who he was.' Unassuming super-sleuth Father Brown has such brilliant powers of deduction that he knows more about crime than the criminals themselves. In this fourth volume of stories, the shabby priest unravels the most baffling conundrums involving, among others, a flying fish, a man with two beards and the Worst Crime in the World. G. K. Chesterton was born in 1874. He attended the Slade School of Art, where he appears to have suffered a nervous breakdown, before turning his hand to journalism. A prolific writer throughout his life, his best- known books include The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1922), The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) and the Father Brown stories. Chesterton converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922 and died in 1938.' Chesterton knew how to make the most of a detective story' Jorge Luis Borges.
