Review: Natalie Lue's writing style is comfortable and relatable, which makes it easy to whip through this book quickly, as if you're in a conversation with an old friend. But it is actually worth taking more time to slow down and consider what she's saying more deeply. I found myself going back to reread many paragraphs more intentionally to absorb the message better and was glad that I did. This is a lesson that many people, women in particular, can benefit from considering and exploring, and it is great to have this very accessible book that is not terribly long, and doesn't take a high or academic tone is excellent. While I am not the hard-core people pleaser that some are, I found many useful tidbits of information I can carry with me to help me make choices about my time and energy more intentionally. I also think it's wonderful that Natalie Lue provides this message from her perspective as a Black woman, who can be forced into people-pleasing roles if they want to excel professionally and in mixed company, having so many negative stereotypes to work against. But while this book is informed by who its author is, of course, the knowledge and tools Lue provides is in no way limited to those of her race or gender. Even someone who feels absolutely no pressure to be a people-pleaser could gain a lot of empathy for those who are simply by reading this book.
