Review: I know very little about Japanese folklore so this was interesting! The world-building is slow and dark. Since I live in London and I have been to Japan, the atmosphere is nicely set up in those cities in the 1800s. I felt for the main character, Ren, at times as she struggled with her mixed-race and feelings of not belonging to any of the two cultures, I can relate and understand the struggles with identity and racism. About the ending, I have to be honest and say that didn't like how Ren behaved towards her brother or even towards herself due to some insta-love (something I hate). However, it made me wonder what role does her brother have in all this? I thought he was somehow crucial to the plot but then that changed. I hope this is explored in the next one! If you don't like cliffhangers, hold on until the second one is out. It also has quite a lot of violence so please do your research for trigger warnings before reading!
