Review: I started reading this book last year, got fed up it seems and I remembered about it a couple of days ago. I stayed up until 2.30am to finish it....how I regret that. I felt stressed reading most of it, Ruth was pathetic and Patrick equally so. The ending was bizarre and rushed,, I was quite bemused by it all. I'd have had Ruth get her comeuppance via some legal route to trump Frederick's, get her full custody and live in a new home somewhere else. Where they did end up I'd just so unrealistic but then so is the way Elizabeth was dealt with. I also hoped Ruth's friend would save her. Not sure of the need fir him in the book really. There were a couple of repetitive scenes (e.g.. Where the 3 of them insist she needs help at the house until Ruth is well and can cope on her own or else they will send her away. Then she becomes hysterical and they bring the Dr in to give her a jab then the next day they insist they will help until she us well again or else they will send her away...pretty sure we just did that!). Some more in depth 'gas lighting' could have been done..its presumed Elizabeth disconnected the boiler clock and that she only presented a note which she said was on the floor but we are to think she produced it from her handbag. More things like this would have been good and then Elizabeth being found out by Patrick would have been better. Sorry!
