Review: I really enjoyed this book which is a sequel to the first Magpie Society book 'One For Sorrow.' This story is the conclusion to the saga. Set in a very old Kent seaside boarding school, two girls try to solve the mystery of a pupil's death the previous term. The story is very engaging, although I did actually suspect the one who turned out to be the culprit. What I found rather ridiculous is that the parts of the book supposedly written by a Brit, were clearly authored by an American, with no effort to get a British person to read the book before publication. Hence loads of rather grating Americanisms that just don't fit, too numerous to mention, but for example continous use of the word smart (a Brit would say clever), dorm room instead of dorms, bugs instead of insects, yelling instead of shouting, green thumbs instead of green fingers, and hilariously, cops pointing guns at an unarmed suspect! (Sorry, this just doesn't happen in the UK unless the culprit has actually been reported to have a firearm).

Review: The denouement is a well-crafted surprise, but the characters are all unbelievable. I have met folk unable to leave their mobile phone alone for a minute (even scanning messages in the middle of a formal dinner) but I find it hard to believe that a whole school could be infected. Also, considering that some of the pupils are intending to progress to university, and one therefore assumes a certain level of intelligence and industry, it is equally hard to believe that every single one of the girls is preoccupied more with evaluating any boy they see as a sexual partner, rather than their studies. Perhaps this says something about the two authors, but - wo'evah - it is very tiresome. Immature teens may find this tale of interest, but the two books are really not for adults.
