Description: A wild and darkly funny book that combines surrealist painter Leonora Carringon's fantastical writing and illustrations for children. The maverick surrealist Leonora Carrington was an extraordinary painter and storyteller who loved to make up stories and draw pictures for her children. She lived much of her life in Mexico, and her sons remember sitting in a big room whose walls were covered with images of wondrous creatures, towering mountains, and ferocious vegetation while she told fabulous and funny tales. That room was later whitewashed, but some of its wonders were preserved in the little notebook that Carrington called The Milk of Dreams. John, who has wings for ears, Humbert the Beautiful, an insufferable kid who befriends a crocodile and grows more insufferable yet, and the awesome Janzamajoria are all to be encountered in The Milk of Dreams, a book that is as unlikely, outrageous, and dreamy as dreams themselves. Review: I bought this book for myself, however if I had children I would read these short tales to them immediately. Leonora Carrington has managed to capture in these small tales the underpinnings of those existential debates we all have within ourselves tinged with elements of surrealism. It is quite fascinating and the illustrations made me laugh out loud on occasion. Einstein once famously said that if you want your children to be intelligent then read them fairy tales. But I have to disagree and say you should tell them the stories from this gem of a book instead.

Review: This very short book contains some fantastically surreal stories, written and illustrated by the author and artist Leanora Carrington. In Headless John, a boy with wings where his ears should be literally loses his head when it flies away. To the boy (and the head itself) the whole experience is a funny adventure. For his mother it is a bit more difficult. Eventually the head is caught, but his mother puts it on the boy's shoulders backwards. These stories are full of unlikely monsters and dreamlike scenarios. I wouldn't think that a child of 8 or 9 would find any of this disturbing, but a parent might be win a pickle if the child asks what it all means. Anyone who is familiar with Carrington's novels, like The Hearing Trumpet or The Stone Door, should not miss this book.
