Review: The Octonauts and the Frown Fish is Harry's first Octonauts book, so neither of us knew what to expect when we received it through the post. I was really impressed with the beautiful front cover, full of bright and bold colour that young readers will love and each of the main characters pictured so children can relate that to what they see on the television easily. This trend continues throughout the book, with the pictures being bright and very colourful, and a joy to look at. Unusually for a child's book, there is always a lot of illustrations on each page, even the smallest details are taken care of and each page is fantastic to look at. The characters all appear on each page and feature prominently, Harry loves going through and seeking them out on each page. The story follows the Octonauts coming a fish that looks very sad, always going around with a frown on its face. The Octonauts decide to take it upon themselves to try and cheer up the Frown Fish, with each of them offering up their own suggestion to make the Frown Fish smile, although none of it seems to work. The Octonauts have to figure out what it is about the Frown Fish that makes him special and save the day once more! It's an easy story for children to follow, with the opportunity for lots of discussion about the ideas going on, and also emotions too which I felt was a good topic for Harry and I to talk about while reading this, and why the creatures all enjoyed different things. The language used throughout the book is quite adult, and I would certainly say all young readers are going to need help reading this, or even just having an adult read it just like I have to with Harry. Some of the terms used are hard for youngsters to get their heads around, but me explaining the ideas to Harry usually sorts it out. The text print is quite small too so not overly child friendly. However, I've found Harry is far more interested in the gorgeous illustrations on each page than the words and is more than content with me reading to him while he points out things all over the book. One thing I adore about this book is while the majority is landscape like the book itself, there are a couple of double page spreads which are printed vertically and so you have to spin the book around to read it, making for a fun and tactile reading experience that children will just love! I think this is a great book for any child that is a fan of the Octonauts series on the television, and will no doubt be enjoyed countless times as it has been already by Harry and I! It's a fairly long book for young ones at 40 pages long, but when you're reading it does seem to go quickly, unless you have little fingers pointing everywhere and wanting to talk about everything! I bought Harry's copy for £3.50 on Amazon which is a great price for such a good quality book. The pages and cover are nice and thick, although the fact it is a paperback means it might show the wear and tear a little more easily, and the illustrations are wonderfully colourful and really stand out every time you read. It's a fun story, a gorgeous book and one Harry and I definitely recommend!
