Description: Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2021. The 1997 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa is one of the most iconic in rugby history. Written off at home and abroad, Martin Johnson's men were given no hope of success against the world champion Springboks in their own backyard. But a combination of brilliant coaching, astute selections and outstanding players laid the foundations for the touring side's outstanding attacking mindset and brutal stonewall defence. On the other side was a team expected to stamp their authority on the tourists and confirm their place as the best side on the planet. But with political, racial and economic scandals swirling around the Springbok camp, plus a rookie coach parachuted into office just before the tour began, the hosts were under huge pressure. In a Test series that will go down in legend as one of the most compelling of all time, the sides could barely be separated. This is the inside story from both camps as they battle for supremacy, lifting the lid like never before as a huge cast of characters look back on those extraordinary weeks and the impact it had on their lives and careers thereafter. Hilarious, insightful and spine-chilling, Tom English and Peter Burns provide the perfect read for all Lions fans. Review: Best rugby book I have read. Totally addictive

Review: Not written as a companion to the Living with Lions DVD, but a terrific companion to it nevertheless. The stories are marvellous, nicely stitched together by the authors but the book is basically the players in their own voices, in many cases speaking openly and refreshingly frankly about other players on the tour. The big drawback for me - the multiple typos. Very irritating.

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Gibson Square Books Ltd

Description: On 29 May 1953 Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary conquered Everest, three days before the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Before their success, Everest had claimed the lives of dozens of climbers, including George Leigh Mallory in 1924. Norgay, the descendant of generations of yak herders, was destined to become a llama, but his love for the mountains was that much stronger. He had but one dream all his life, despite seven sherpas dying in 1922, and that was to conquer Everest. For thirty years expeditions had been struggling to scale its fiendishly difficult icy slopes and he was part of every single one until the one with Hillary succeeded. No adventure enthusiast will want to miss this unique Buddhist perspective on climbing. Gibson Square Books Ltd After Everest - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
